Help Women in the "Rape Capital of the World" - Run for Congo Women UK
By ashleigh@womenf... on September 17, 2010
The crisis in the Congo continues to rage claiming thousands of lives every day. This conflict particularly affects women and girls as they are systematically raped as a combat strategy to terrorise and humiliate.Tens-of-thousands of women and girls have experienced sexual violence - some raped whilst on the way to school, others while fetching water, and many are kept as sex slaves for soldiers. The situation is so extreme that Margot Wallström, the UN’s special representative on sexual violence in conflict, has recently called DR Congo the “rape capital of the world.”
Run for Congo UK is a campaign run by Women for Women International to raise money to help Congolese women who have been affected by the conflict to rebuild their lives. The first UK run took place in July with over 100 runners raising more than £32,000 and with the next run coming up more enthusiastuc runners are needed.
The next Run for Congo will take place on 13th November in Greenwich Park and is a chance for anyone who wants to run, walk or skip their support for the women of Congo to get involved. In July there were runners of all abilities, including lots of first time runners, so don’t be afraid to give it a go. All sponsorship money raised goes directly to projects in the Congo which quite literally transform women’s lives.
