Helping Beginning Bloggers & Why Women Are Our Own Worst Enemy

As I approach my blog's one year anniversary, I am spending some time this morning organizing my contacts and Google docs to reflect the changing nature of my blog.   Digging back into the archives, I came across an email from another "mom blogger" whom I contacted not long after getting started about a link exchange possibility.  Having read this blog for months and getting the courage to contact the two ladies who run it (they were one of the first I personally contacted about my blog at the time,) I received a rather pointed "No thanks" having sited "your not even listed on Technorati."  Admittedly, I had some web address issue the night before with a glitch in moving to my own domain, but I had done my homework and was listed on the site they mentioned.

I recently read an article on a blog about moms, I daresay women in general, being our own worst critics and am unsure why that is the case?  Now that I am in a position to answer questions from beginning bloggers I do not hesitate to offer as much help as I can even with a full time job, two kids, running Citymommy NEPA and a slew of other blog-related emails and tasks to complete.  I can never in a million years imagine myself dismissing someone out of hand whose position I was once in and possibly being the person who discourages them from the wonderful world of blogging.

If you're a new blogger, I'd be happy to help.  And if you're an established one, try to remember the words of Atticus Fintch in To Kill Kill a Mockingbird:  "Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes..."

To answer the question of why we're so tough on each other...I can honestly say I don't have a clue. Any thoughts?

This is every bloggers #1 concern i think so you're in good company. I am constantly looking for ways to get readers so I think spending some times on blog networking, like you are doing on this site, is key. WhHile there's no easy answer, here are some of the things I've done:

1. Read and comment on more blogs.

2. Join Entrecard.  It can be confusing to start but really helped me out. I have a post on www.askbabykid.com ( http://www.askbabykid.com/ ) about this as well.

3. Use sosial networking sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn.

4. Engage readers by asking questions on your posts and creating as much of a dialogue as possible.

5. If it fit with the theme of your site, run contests. Giveaways are a gerat way to bring traffic and therefore potential readers to your site.

I hope this helps! :)

There were a million different ways those women could have handled your request, and yet the way they handled it resulted in the loss of a potential reader as well as the traffic your blog (no matter how humble they percieved it to be at the time) could have brought to their site. Hopefully their mistake will be a lesson to others.  Sadly, I guess some people never grow out of that "mean girl" stage.

Very gracious of you! I've been blogging for a year now, but have taken many breaks, changed the direction of my blog many times, and at first didn't worry too much about traffic and promotion. But now, having a bit more substance to my writing, I would like more readers and wonder exactly how to accomplish that. Suggestions?

You are very gracious to offer your help. Personality can really shine through in the blogging world as well as in other forms of communication. I've met well-established bloggers who have taken time and answered my questions even though I was totally new. Others apparently are in it less for the people than for the money/fame. In the long term hopefully those who encourage others will shine through, after all, I bet you didn't enjoy reading that blog you'd been reading for months after you got the cold shoulder!

I'd be really happy to receive any advice you have to offer.
