Hi everyone --

Since the very first mortgage foreclosure blog post appeared on BlogHer.com in February 2008, I've been watching women in social media worry about the economy -- about friends and family among the 9.1 percent of Americans out of work, about markets globally. Susan of On the Edge recently channeled many of your blogs:

Economy. Jobs. Economy. Jobs.

"... Why should ANYBODY be forced to accept the idea that being out of work for two years -- hey, how about almost FOUR years -- be considered the "new normal," to use yet another hackneyed phrase? These and other related issues need to be front and center at all times because this affects everybody not in the top one percent or one tenth of one percent."

We can make a difference as a community of bloggers and social media influencers: The BlogHer team is proud to partner with the folks at Starbucks and Opportunity Finance Network to get the word out about CreateJobsforUSA.org, launching officially on November 1st. They've developed a program that's about walk, not talk, when it comes to getting Americans back to work, and we are putting our full support behind the program. (Note: While we are proud that Starbucks has sponsored BlogHer multiple times, all BlogHer support of this program is donated pro bono.)

What is this all about? You can hear it from Starbucks Chairman and CEO Howard Schultz yourself this Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. PT/ 2p.m. ET -- you are invited to join a conference call between the BlogHer community, Howard and the Starbucks team for a 15-minute Q&A to talk about createjobsforusa.org and answer your questions. I'll host and ask 2-3 questions from the community -- please add your question in the comments below or link to a post where you ask one so that I can credit you for your question on the call.

Update 11/3: To listen to the audio transcript of the conference call between BlogHer's Lisa Stone and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz discussing the initiative and answer questions from women who blog, please use this audio player -- and thanks, everyone, who asked a question and called in!

In a nutshell, Starbucks is donating five million dollars to seed a fund at the Opportunity Finance Network for capital grants to local lenders who fund small businesses that make a difference. Businesses like Zonia Torres's overnight day care in San Francisco and like Nicholas Kujawa's housing units and fresh local market in Butte, Montana -- these are my favorite examples as a former single mom who had to figure out how to work nights occasionally, and as a Montanan who watched the towns of Butte and Anaconda suffer when local mines declined. But you can see many more examples here.

This challenging economy has affected all of us, but perhaps most profoundly, it has created a difficult climate for small, local businesses to gain access to the funds they need to grow, create jobs and hire. I may be talking about you specifically: If you are a BlogHer Publishing Network member, your site is a small business in the best sense -- a labor of love that brings revenue and opportunity. We know that many of the women -- and men! -- in the BlogHer community own brick-and-mortar small businesses and other online businesses as well, or have a Big Idea that is lacking only funding to get off the ground.

Here's what I'm asking you to consider:

* Join the conference call! Starbucks, led by Howard Schultz, is one of America's most successful small businesses. I urge you to hear him talk about why he thinks we can move the needle with this program.

Update 11/3: To listen to the audio transcript of the conference call between BlogHer and Starbucks discussing the initiative, please listen using the audio player:

 * Share your story on your blog and link to createjobsforusa.org. How has the economy affected you or your town? Do you know someone who cannot get a job or start a business? Are you worried about unemployment? NOTE: BlogHer will donate $5 on behalf of each of the first 2,000 posts on this topic. If you blog it, please enter your link in the comments on my post of this newsletter. Below my signature, I've provided some badges and code for your posts and sidebars.

* Follow @Jobs_for_USA on Twitter. Tweet a link to your story (or heck, tweet a link to the donation page at createjobsforusa.org), @blogher and use the #createjobsforusa hashtag

* Donate. Beginning November 1st, you may donate to this fund through thecreatejobsforusa.org website, or at Starbucks, and 100% of your donation will go directly to the fund. Donors who contribute $5 or more will receive a red, white and blue wristband with the message “Indivisible.” The really cool thing about this is that every $5 donation will result in $35 in financing to support community businesses, because the local lenders will issue $30 in financing, on average, for each $5 donation -- every $3,000 in donations creates or saves a job. You can read all about it on the Web site.

Linda, fantastic post - just left you a comment. You should see the dents on my car!

I loved the answer by CEO Howard Schultz to your question--from his personal story to corporate conscience. I agree with him that we can't wait for Washington -- we need to take responsibility.

Thanks for being part of the solution with your post. It's a pleasure to donate $5 to createjobsforusa.org on your behalf.

Great post momwriter! Just left a comment on Chicago Now that I hadn't heard Mark Pinsky's interview on NPR before your post, love this quote:

"We are profitable institutions. Our lending is profitable, but we are not profit-maximizing," he says. "And in the space between profit and profit-maximizing, there is a lot you can do if you are willing to work with your borrowers [and] give them the help they need to succeed."

Amen. It's a pleasure to donate $5 on behalf of yourself and ChicagoNow to this initiative. Thanks for being part of the solution.

Lisa, I couldn't be there for the call in and didn't get a question formulated. I'm wondering, however, if there's a site somewhere with the transcript of the discussion, or at least the questions and answers. I see that the program provides grants to lenders. I'm wondering why that format was chosen, rather than directly providing grants to small businesses. Do the loans reach more people? Are they low interest? Flexible? Can they be forgiven or partially forgiven? How do these loans differ from other small business loans? How much of the money goes towards profit to the lenders, and how much benefits the hiring businesses?

Lisa Stone 19 pts moderator

Dorid Hi Dorid, happy to answer that yes, the audio link is now live. To your question about this format, I'm not an expert on financial grants, but I am indeed impressed by the structure OFN has created to work with people who have expertise with different locales and instruments. A wonderful and helpful post, Lisa. I see so many great responses here, and so many crying out for help. I've never really written about all that our own family has gone through, since the spiraling began in the Silicon Valley. But reading all these post only makes me realize that we are not alone in the worry and fear department.

Great initiative, and it involves coffee - sort of - which fits in so nicely with everything I'm about. Thanks for including my question in the conference call. Here's my post: http://www.dailycupofjo.com/?p=3231

If you have been always struggling to make ends meet, as my husband and I have been doing for the past 30 years, the current economic downturn is just another blip on the radar screen for us. What is different, however, is our constant discussion to just throw in the towel and give up. At 60 and 54, how much longer do we have to take this? My husband was just laid off from his job yet again.

Another day. Another almost dollar.

alexks thank you so much for sharing this story. You nailed what I read everywhere: "We need all the money we can get, and that's the truth for almost all families today." Here's to you taking the time to help blog a solution. It's an honor to donate $5 to this effort in the name of Los Angeles Mamma!

Hi Lisa,

I'll be on the call later. Thanks for facilitating this.

I haven't had a chance to write a blog post, because I was rushing to put up today an crowdfunding campaign that was partly inspired by Schultz' process and vision and how they came up with Create Jobs for USA. So in that vein, I'm hosting gatherings to leverage our talents and assets called We Are The Economy, see http://www.indiegogo.com/wearetheeconomy (I'm now in Vegas, and the employment situation is officially the worst in the country.)

Anyhow, the question I have (and I have read both his books) is that while I am personally very excited about this initiative and am on my way to Starbucks now, I have many friends who are cynical and believe this is only a PR move. My hunch is there is more to it than that.

Could he share more about what motivated them to do this as it's not exactly coffee-related, and how it ties into a public company's vision/mission? I'm sure there may be others on the other extreme (stockholders) that feel this isn't aligned closely enough to Starbuck's business to warrant investing in this.

Thanks so much.

eve11 Wonderful question, Evelyn, thank you. I will ask. And thanks for the links to your work at We Are the Economy.

I'm not really sure I understand the premise. Who gets the interest when the loans from this program are handed out? Where is the funding coming from? It looks like it's coming from donators, not a company who is associating it's name with it. Perhaps I'm not understanding?

my darling husband has been out of work since 2008. we managed to stay afloat with savings that got us through the first 18 months...BARELY afloat. we lost the dream home that we built and worked so very hard for just this last June. I have blogged way too much about it. I think my husband and I are at a point where we have definitely lost hope. Who wants to hire folks approaching their 50s? We are over qualified, over educated for any available job these days and yes, at this point all my husband wants is a job, any job
This only one piece that I wrote about what my husband's long-term unemployment and recession has done to our family:

I'm hoping for a replay option as I had an issue an had to hang up when the Marketing Communication Director got on. And BTW - <3 Starbucks...its Red Cup time! I worked for Sbx back in 1992-94 in college and had the opportunity to meet with Howard Shultz a couple of times. Its a great company and I still support them to this day with my daily cup!

I love the idea of creating jobs. But, how can Starbucks help with the "behind the scenes" infrastructure that will help people keep those jobs? I'm talking specifically about the cost of childcare. I was laid off almost 5 years ago. Every time I decide it's time to go back to full time employment, the cost of childcare (especially during the summer months) is what keeps me home. I know for many of my SAHM friends, this is a huge issue.

not sure if we can ask questions, but can we try to ask him something along the lines of- it would be helpful if local starbucks carried merchandise for sale from local authors, musicians, artists, etc. they could make a HUGE impact on local people who are attempting to make a living off of the arts.
