HGTV's House Hunters makes home buying look so easy...too bad it's not!
By Not Another Dir... on December 10, 2010
I'm an HGTV fan fanatic. Really! My husband says that I have the channel on 24/7. Maybe because I'm slightly obsessed with buying a new home and/or updating our current living arrangements -- or maybe just because the show is kid friendly and I can have it on and not worry about my toddlers hearing or seeing anything that should not.
One of my favorite shows is HGTV's House Hunters. I love that show. I mean three houses in a half hour and BOOM, the couple always seems to select the right one and they're all moved in and happy -- all within 30 minutes. Maybe this is what is wrong with people today. Reality TV make instant gratification seem so attainable....well it's not.
We've been searching for a home for about 2 years. That being said, we haven't been doing our absolute due diligence...well I should preface that by saying my hubs has only been half heartedly looking. And dragging him out every weekend with a realtor hasn't been easy. In fact, it's just recently that we've been spending our weekends, loading and unloading the kids at every open house in the targeted neighborhoods we've narrowed our home search to. And let me tell you, it's exhausting. Seriously.
I was so excited to buy a house. I still am but some of that excitement has how left. It's slowly becoming a chore. This house has only three bedrooms, that house doesn't have a yard. The house looks great on the MLS listing but when we arrive we realize the trickery of good photography and leave disappointed, yet again. The house that we accidently stumbled upon is a dream but so far out of our price range. And the list goes on and on.
To my husband's credit, it's probably best that he was dragging his feet during our two year house hunt...he never reads my blog so I'm safe admitting he's right without having to hear all about it. Prices seem to be dropping and properties that were unattainable just two years ago are now at the top of our price range. Who knew? But as the media continues to speculate about the double dip recession and articles project even more real estate discounts in bubble markets such as San Diego -- do we buy? Or just wait?
Well I've gone and done it! I've fallen in love with a house. And not just any house. It's a fixer upper. A forecloser. One in the zip code I've been dreaming of....but the house needs work to get it up-to-date and let's be honest, inhabitable. What to do, what to do. And smack dab in the middle of the holiday season.
I wish the voiceover on HGTV's House Hunters or even Sandy Rinomato from Property Virgins could suddenly be heard overhead telling me (I mean us, since it is a joint decision with the hubs) what to do.
Why can't I be settled in my perfect house -- all moved it and cozied up to the fire, all in perfect order -- within a 30 minute time period? I mean it happens on every episode of House Hunters and Property Virgins? Come on HGTV, send some of your TV trickery (ahem, I mean magic) my way this holiday season.
