Hi. I’m Julia and I’m addicted to food…
By vegasmotherrunner on July 17, 2014
Well, only 3 foods actually. Hummus, grapes, and smoothies. I guess it could be worse, right? I don’t know what it is about these three foods, but I could eat a very large portion of them every single day (and often I do). I love snacking on hummus and carrot chips between breakfast and lunch, and grapes are my go to dessert when I’m craving something sweet after dinner, but smoothies are my absolute favorite post workout recovery food.
I used to drink chocolate milk after running because I read so many things about how good the combination and ratio of proteins to carbohydrates is for your muscle recovery. But, let’s be real here. Chocolate milk isn’t exactly the healthiest drink, especially when you can achieve the same effect from a delicious smoothie that is also chock full of vitamins. It’s also my go-to way to get fruits and vegetables into my girls when they are refusing to eat any on any given day (if you have picky eaters like I do, you can definitely relate).
I love playing around with smoothie recipes. My favorites are strawberry banana, peanut butter banana, and a new recipe I’ve been making that is so delicious and so full of super foods that I’m going to share it with you today. Usually when I make a smoothie, I like to add a touch of honey for a little added sweetness (which usually means more of it will be consumed by my girls as well). But, what I love about this smoothie recipe is that the combination of the ingredients works so well that you don’t need anything extra. I will say, it’s not the most attractive looking smoothie, but I promise you it is delicious.
Super Food Smoothie
1 cup carrot juice
5 oz. vanilla Greek low-fat yogurt
1 orange, peeled and sectioned
1/2 lime, peeled and sectioned
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 cup blueberries
1 banana, cut into sections
1 cup fresh spinach
1 tablespoon ground flax seed
Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. This recipe yields 2-3 servings.
I hope you will try out this recipe and let me know what you think in the comments below. Also, I’d love to hear what your favorite post workout recovery drink/food is. Are you addicted to any foods like I am?
