High School Musical 2 hit the airwaves on Friday, and the world will never be the same. Just ask any tween...

Molly at Buzz Sugar reports on the remarkable numbers put up by Disney’s High School Musical 2.

Friday night's premiere of "High School Musical 2" on The Disney Channel brought in 17.24 million viewers, which makes it the most watched basic cable program ever. Yes, you read that right - ever. Not only that, but it was the most watched Friday night television program in five years. So I'm guessing it wasn't only tweens and their parents watching those spunky kids dance and sing their hearts out. I'm totally curious - did you watch High School Musical 2?

I’m a little stunned by those kind of numbers – but then again, it has been the talk of the elementary school crowd since the kids have been back to school.

Deb over at NiceDeb is something of a High School Musical Expert, and she found the buildup to the premiere pretty exciting:

I know a little something about this, because I have six kids, and four of them are girls. And all four girls loved The High School Musical, and were looking forward to High School Musical 2, with much anticipation.

My twelve year old got invited to a High School Musical 2 Party, Fri. night, where they all dressed up as their favorite character to watch the movie. My 9, and 15 year olds had friends over for sleepovers. We ordered pizza, and spread out a big blanket on the floor of the loft, and let them scarf on Pizza while they watched. The Munchkin, (my seven year old) is going to a High School Musical birthday party, tomorrow.

To say that these movies are popular, is a gross understatement.

So, what is the big deal with these made-for-TV extravaganzas? Parents tout the wholesome action and catchy music.

AnneBadger appreciates the safe viewing for her family:

As a mom, I have a responsibility to make sure Rachel is not watching stuff too old for her. The first High School Musical was so cute, so when she wanted to watch the second one, I took a chance…All in all, it was a good movie. It reminded me of the Dirty Dancing movie without the bad language or inapropriate innuendos.

I’ve heard High School Musical compared to Grease for the ‘tween set. Back in my tween days, we just had Grease. And we liked it that way. And our parents liked it that way, too. We didn’t worry about all that inappropriate content and bad language. We memorized the dance moves and lyrics, the unsanitized versions, thank you very much. We marveled at those black spandex pants and practiced the high-heeled cigarette stomp-out. We turned out just fine.

We did. Shut up.

Anyway, what I’m saying here is that High School Musical and its sequel are not Grease.

Kitty-chan goes ahead and breaks it all down for those of us who are a bit mystified by this whole HSM franchise in her hilarious entry, All About The Shoes Baby:

I watched the premiere of High School Musical 2 last night, along with my son and two of my adorable nieces. There was, predictably, much support for the right side of the blatant class warfare, and much swooning over the clean-cut, sharply-pressed teen stars.

If you watched it, you don’t need me to summarize; if you didn’t watch it, I’m sure you don’t care to hear the basic plot details anyway. But here are the crucial stats and highlights, from the point of view of my living room television audience…

I will say that the choreography and music from High School Musical 2 is well-done and catchy. I appreciate a good dance number. So, let’s hear it – did you watch it? What do you think about this whole phenomenon?

I really think that is one of the big strengths of Disney's HSM franchise - it is getting families to watch together.

So I go to NJ with kids in tow this past weekend. I have 4 kids who have been waiting for HSM2 since all the hype began. So we are all set to get ready to watch--I baked s'mores brownies--vegan--without dairy- our favorites. Well, can you believe a lightening storm knocked out the satellite service at my sister's. My kids were so sad, I mean it was pathetic. You would have thought I deliberately rigged the heavens to cause this storm. The system was out all weekend and God knows when the movie will air--although it is the Disney Channel so I suspect anyday now there will be a marathon of sorts.
SIGH!

were all organized so as not to miss it. They got together to watch it, they planned their lives to be home. And they watched every second. It was an event in the Disney world. I watched it with my 10 year old granddaughter and my daughter. The 10 year old filled us in on the backstory that we needed to know from the first High School Musical so we could keep up with the story line.

Just a point of fact, not to spoil anyone's fun. Those mountains in the background are not Albuquerque's mountains, and there is no University of Albuquerque.
