Overshadowing the BET coverage is the fact that Chris Brown cried during the Michael Jackson tribute when he tried to sing "Man in the Mirror," but bloggers are talking about the winners and performances at the award show, including Prince's lifetime achievement award.

Bloggers Comment on the 2010 BET Awards:

  • Celebglitz focuses on Best Male R&B Artist, Trey Songz (who brought his mum!).
  • Gabby Babble points out the problem with having Chris Brown lead the Michael Jackson tribute: "I wonder how Jackson’s family felt about a woman abuser paying tribute to their son/brother, I’m sure there were mixed feelings."
  • Whose Shoes are These Anyway touched on Prince's award for Lifetime Achievement, including a video, as well as a pregnant Alicia Keyes's tribute to Prince by covering his song, "Adore U."
  • Luvin' My Curves covers Queen Latifah's costume changes.
  • Zap2News talks about El DeBarge's comeback performance as well as the fact that the night was a big comeback for moment for many artists: "Kanye West came back from hiding from Taylor Swift fans. Chris Brown came back from the land of public disdain to pay tribute to Michael Jackson. And '80s singer El DeBarge, lead singer of his family's band, DeBarge, made a solid return to the stage."
  • HipHopWired has a video of El DeBarge's performance.

I love how he's half-smiling and nodding through the performances.

Absolutely possible. I definitely need to be more wary :-)

Prince getting the award is the only reason I watched.

I kind of adore Prince and always have so I'm tickled (though I didn't get to watch).

As opposed to Melissa, I pretty much view everything that Chris Brown does as a publicity stunt so I'm not buying it. Just not.

I should have thought of that! It would have made math class more interesting :-)

Ever since "I wanna be your lover", I've listened to him. I don't like all of his music, but he is such an inventive musician!! It's great! He seemed very gracious as he watched the other performers cover his music.

Melissa, I had his picture on my algebra book.

Prince was one of my first crushes that wasn't going with the crowd. I loved Michael and I had his picture on my folder (the one where he's leaning against the wall and wearing a yellow sweater vest--do you know that classic picture?), but when I first heard Doves Cry, I switched to Prince. I still have the Prince button I used to wear to school. And that Lovesexy album...

Prince is always cute with that impish smile.

As much as I'm not a fan of Chris Brown in general, I took the breakdown as real. Especially because of that opening line: "I'm gonna make a change / for once in my life." I took it as facing the enormity of changing yourself--a very private moment within a very public performance.

But maybe I'm giving the man too much credit.

hahaha!

I know what you mean about Prince. Self-implosion seemed imminent and then... it didn't. Fascinating.

I just saw the interview he had with Brian McKnight. El is looking mighty fine.

Very nice indeed. If I had cable I wouldn't have watched BET but if I knew that El was going to be on I'd found somebody's house to visit for a spell.

And his Purpleness, I'm tearing up just looking at him because I thought he was the stone crazy one that was going to self-imploded.

More true to himself and his music than I could ever know. Wish he would ease up and let folks see his early work on YT but I understand his reasons.

I need a tissue.

And... I already admitted I didn't watch the show so I wanted to see what everyone was talking about re: Chris Brown (who I don't like) breaking down while trying to sing Man in the Mirror.

The videos of this keep getting pulled from youtube and BET hasn't yet released one so it was hard to find one I could watch, in full. I found one... I watched... Chris Brown makes me miss Michael. And... I'm really interested in what happened there. Why couldn't/didn't Brown sing? What caused that breakdown? Was it legit? Or... what? What do you think?

I didn't watch last night. I never watch TV and I was very confused when I started seeing a ton of people tweeting and Facebooking about Prince. (Use more hashtags, people!)

When I woke up this morning and realized it was the BET Awards and that Prince got the Lifetime Achievement Award, I was kind of grouchy that I'd missed the show.

Thankfully, I read Nordette's blog faithfully every morning and got to see some really awesome performances of Prince's songs (and the shots of the very adorable Prince watching all of the musicians perform his work.)

Awesome - all of them were awesome but I was particularly floored by Alicia Keyes. Great performance.
