Holiday Gift Guide 2008: Sexy Cell Phones & Accessories

BlogHer Original Post

Tech gadgets are one of my favorite parts of holiday shopping. It seems like every company out there is releasing a new something or other. This year is no exception: there are new cell phones trying to match iPhone capabilities, cell phones for kids and seniors, even a digital frame that syncs with your cell phone.

Blackberry Storm

The Blackberry Storm will be released tomorrow. Is it all it's cracked up to be? The Gadgetress doesn't think so:

The Storm goes on sale Friday from Verizon Wireless but we were visited this week by Verizon’s Irvine folks, who demonstrated all that the Storm could do. . .While 30 minutes of play time really isn’t enough to really get to know a gadget, I feel that it is all I needed. This won’t be my next phone. But I believe the corporate world, BlackBerry fans and smartphone lovers will and should be excited.

Kajeet: Cell Phone for Kids

My kids have been begging for cell phones for as long as I can remember. They feel very grown up when I occasionally consent to let them carry mine when they are riding their bikes. Although I'm not quite ready to give them their own cell phones (a topic for another post), you may be. And the Kajeet cell phone may be what you're looking for. Val's Views

Jitterbug: Cell Phones for Seniors

As our parents and even grandparents get older, these new-fangled small-as-can-be cell phones are hard on the eyes and the hands. And many members of older generations are simply techno-phobic. Having a cell phone, though, can be a literal lifesaver. Ed, of Ed Icionsub was worried about his own grandmother and did some research to see which cell phone would work for her and found the Jitterbug:

[The Jitterbug] has a lot of features designed for senior, like a backlit dial pad and large, easy to see numbers. Their web site is easy to click through and they have very economical services, from as little as $15 per month and pay as you go, to unlimited minutes with all the bells and whistles for only $80.

Samsung Cleo

For our Canadian readers, you have your own special holiday gift: the Samsung Cleo. From Samsung Cleo cell phone sashays into Canada via PopGadget: Personal Tech + Innovative Lifestyle for Women:

The ultra-stylish Samsung Cleo, launched in the Canadian market, is unlike any other flip phone in its shape - it is a solid square with a lovely floral pattern inscribed on the outside, and as Samsung describes it, is quite like powder compact (of the make-up kind). When flipped open, it measures a total length of just 5.5 inches in spite of containing a full-blown QWERTY keypad and a spacious color LCD screen that can display your SMS messages as threads of text conversation. Plus Samsung throws in a 1.3MP camera, an MP3 player with up to 8GB expandable memory, and Bluetooth (stereo).

T-Mobile Cameo Digital Picture Frame

T-Mobile is offering the Cameo, a digital picture frame that allows you to download pictures from your cell phone directly to the frame via a wireless network (it also works with direct connections to your Mac, PC, or digital camera). The Cameo is $100 for the frame and requires a $10/month service charge added to your T-Mobile voice plan. Shawn Brown at Slash Gear says:

Photos can even be sent via email and displayed almost instantaneously in the picture frame. “The T-Mobile cameo is the gift that keeps on giving,” said Wendy Piñero-DePencier, vice president, brand marketing, T-Mobile USA. “Because receiving and displaying pictures on the frame can happen in an instant, families with the frame will always be on the lookout for new snapshots coming in. And for people sending pictures, the cameo lets you share impromptu moments in your day and keep important people close, no matter how near or far you are.”

Jawbone

Jawbone is apparently the best Bluetooth headset available (alas, I have no experience with this so if you have a differing experience, do tell in the comments). It is certainly sleek and sexy. It's been available in Blah Blah Black, Goldy Lips, and Silver Tongue. It's now available in Rambling Rose and Babbling Blue. However, the new colors are only available at the Jawbone web site or Best Buy Mobile stores.

iPhone

Last, but certainly not least, is, of course, the iPhone. My favorite holiday accessory for the iPhone is the Noel case

:

The unibody shell design has precise cutouts that allow you to use all controls and inputs without removing the case. And so the face of your iPhone doesn’t feel left out, each case comes with a bonus mirrored screen protector which makes the front of your iPhone just as shiny as the back.

Mmmmm. Shiny. They run about $30 and come in silver, red, gold, and blue.

While you're thinking of your iPhone or iTouch, don't forget to check out Virginia DeBolt's series on those gadgets and iTunes:
