Holiday Gift Guide: The Top Ten Cookbooks for Vegans

BlogHer Original Post
I often say that I've gone all digital with media, but there is one, true exception: Cookbooks. I have piles of them. I love them. I paperclip the recipes I want to try. I ogle the pictures. So, it was my pleasure to step up and offer to create a holiday gift guide for the vegetarians, vegans and veg-leaning people in your lives. These are the Top Ten Cookbooks that belong on any veg*n's shelf:
1. Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero
This is the premiere vegan cookbook. It's comprehensive, full of delicious goodness, and comes with the distinct voice of these two vegan cookbook divas. My favorite recipe: Vegan Mac Daddy, the vegan take on a baked Macaroni & Cheese casserole. Look up "nom" in the dictionary, and you're sure to find a picture of the Mac Daddy there.
Bonus books by the same authors: Since it's the holidays, how can I not tell you that these same authors have written three dessert-focused books: 2. Vegan Cupcakes take Over the World, 3. Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar and their latest, 4. Vegan Pie in the Sky. I smell gift set!!!
5. The Joy of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick Goudreau
If you're like me, you grew up with the Joy of Cooking on the shelf and turned to it for every little thing. Similarly, The Joy of Vegan Baking covers every kind of baked dessert and will introduce you to every possible known substitute for eggs there is! One of my proud vegan moments was when the family entrusted dessert for Christmas dinner to me. I turned to this book and made the Light Lemon Bundt Cake (with icing) and the Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Frosting. Both were easy, quick and most importantly of all: Gobbled up by my decidedly non-vegan family. What other endorsement do you need?
6. Vegan Holiday Kitchen by Nava Atlas (with photographs by BlogHer's own Susan Voisin!)
New to the shelf is this offering from prolific cookbook author, Atlas. While obviously it was released in time for the biggest food holiday of them all, Thanksgiving, the book also covers other holidays, even the Fourth of July. It also include Jewish holiday cooking, which means this book really covers all its bases.Whenever or whoever your vegan buddy is entertaining, this book will help them hit the right notes.
7. The Vegan Slow Cooker by Kathy Hester
OK. I confess. I think there's a slow cooker buried somewhere in the pile of wedding gifts that I have no room to open and put away in my oh-my-God-I'm-dying-to-remodel-but can't-afford-or-face-it ktichen. Yes, I was married four years ago. Don't judge. Weep for me and my pathetic kitchen with lack of counter space. It's a wonder I cook at all. This is the cookbook to motivate me to dig it out. And if you have a veg friend with a simliar pile (or perhaps just a dusty slow cooker in the cabinet) this is the cookbook for them too.
8. The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone
If you think, as I do, that Clueless is one of the movie masterpeices of the 90s (and I do), then this is the book for you. Alicia Silverstone has a warm, friendly, non-threatening way of communicating about her lifestyle that makes you want to give it a try. Alicia Silverstone got me to try kale. Alicia Silverstone convinced me to buy umeboshi plums. I would basically follow Alicia Silverstone anywhere because she's so adorable.
I'll close by recommending books from two women I had the pleasure and honor to interview for BlogHer. Both are inspiring and encouraging. Their books might just be the answer for that friends who wants to go veg, but needs support to finally make the plunge.
Since I have all of the above books, please feel free to leave your recommendations for gifts for ME in the coments!
