A Holiday Spectacular!

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of introducing The Boy to the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Fellow PSMMer Shannon Choe, of the blog Premier Baby Concierge, had an opportunity for bloggers to attend The Holiday Spectacular which was just what this Grinch needed.

The Boy and I planned to make a day out of the outing, and after meeting up with some of the ladies of PSMM we headed inside for the show.

As the show began, The Boy excitedly whispered that he knew the songs played from watching Tom and Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale.  A co-worker once told me that he learned to love classical music from hours of cartoons.  Apparently this is also how The Boy has his appreciation.

The concert was breathtaking.  Conductor Cristian Măcelaru showed the passion and fire (I'm about to date myself) of past conductor Ricardo Muti minus the tantrums. The Boy and I loved watching him lead the orchestra.  He was sometimes more entertaining than the music itself!

Narrator Charlotte Blake Alston was just as great as the reviews I have heard about her.  She told the story of The Nutcracker with such gusto that even though I know the story, I was on the edge of my seat to hear more.

Dancers from the Philadelphia Ballet II performed select scenes from The Nutcracker to the delight of the audience.  We were then treated to more songs from the orchestra.  Charlotte returned to the stage to read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.  Hearing this classic story read with the orchestra playing along is a true treat.

The Boy seemed like he was asleep, more than once I nudged him to make sure he was awake.  He told me later that he was using his other senses to fully experience the show.  I'm going to let him roll with this because he was able to tell me what musician he liked the best: Tchaikovsky.

A special guest came into the hall.

SANTA CLAUS!

I know I was more excited than The Boy.  I squealed for Santa and was pleased to receive a  wave and a comment about my dress.  Santa led the orchestra in a raucous version of Sleigh Bells, and I truly lost it then.

Sleigh Bells is one of my favorite songs of the season.  When I was in high school, this song  was always the show stopper of our annual Songs of The Season.

This is a great new tradition for me.  Music to get myself in the mood for the holidays, a handsome date, and light shopping after.

I rekindled a love of the arts in Philadelphia so much that I'm returning to see Rachmaninoff in Philadelphia this Thursday!
