The Holocaust and the State of Israel
by Hadassah

Last night, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert
spoke at the official Yom Hashoah ceremony.  He focused on the
phenomenon of Holocaust denial.  Since the Holocaust is so clearly
documented - in official government documents, photographs, eyewitness
accounts as well as the concentration camps themselves, Holocaust
deniers are obviously not searching for historical truth.  Rather, they
are attempting to de-legitimize the existence of the State of Israel.
According to their logic, the State of Israel was created because the

Jews garnered sympathy from the international community through
“fabrication” of the Holocaust.

Aside from the fact that the Holocaust most certainly did occur,
Holocaust deniers are also wrong in assuming that the State of Israel
is a direct result of the Holocaust.  In fact, Israel owes its
existence to the historic right of the Jewish people to live freely in
their own land.  This right was recognized by the British government
already in the 1917 Balfour Declaration, two decades before the
Holocaust.  The need for a Jewish National Home became clearer to the
international community over time.  The Holocaust emphasized the need
for a haven for the Jewish people, who had had nowhere to turn to in
the dark days of World War Ii.  The U.N. voted to partition Palestine,
and the Arabs, refusing to accept partition, attacked Israel and lost
their half of Palestine.

As we reach the 60th anniversary of the independence of Israel, we
take for granted that every Jew has a home in the Land of Israel.
Anti-Semitism has not disappeared from the world, but the Jews are no
longer forced to surrender to it.  The inexplicable horrors of the
Holocaust will not repeat themselves.
