Hive Mind

Here’s how my husband filled out a portion of Wombat’s getting-to-know-you survey for kindergarten. He was mostly just being silly, and we all enjoyed a modest chuckle over it before moving on to more traditional concerns about starting a new school (will he get bullied? will he be able to tie his shoes? ...more

Update On Suspected Ebola Case At Obafemi Awolowo University Health Center

A female student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife was said to have presented with symptoms suspected to be the deadly Ebola virus earlier this week at the school health center.Though the management of the school initially denied the development but they later released a more comprehensive statement, saying the sick student had been moved to the isolation ward in Lagos. The University statement, signed by the Public Relations of the university, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju late on Tuesday, reads; “A female student of the OAU, Ile-Ife who is suspected to be a secondary contact of the Ebola Virus Disease in Port-Harcourt, presented sick at the University Health Centre. After a clinical assessment by the Ebola Surveillance Preparedness and Response Committee of the University, the authorities thereafter contacted the State Ministry of Health, the Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation(WHO).“The female suspected secondary Ebola contact has since been evacuated to the appropriate facility in Lagos for further investigations to confirm her status.”“In the meantime, the National team and the World Health Organisation team on Ebola Control have promptly decontaminated the University Health Centre despite the fact that the case is yet to be confirmed.“The University authorities wish to emphasise the fact that the case is not a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease and therefore request all members of the University Community to remain calm as the situation is fully under control.” The Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Temitope Ilori, also confirmed the report, and according to him, the student had confessed having contact with the late Port Harcourt doctor, Iyke Enemuo, who died of the EVD after he secretly treated an infected ECOWAS diplomat, Olu-Ibukun Koye, in a hotel in the Rivers State capital ....more

Sleepover Rules

I had a bit of a fight with my 11 year old the other night. And when I say “fight” I mean I told her “no” about something she really wanted to do and she rolled her eyes and crossed her arms in front of her and told me that I was a “Mean Mom” and then went on to say how “Everyone ELSE gets to do it!” and that “It’s no big deal!” and “You must hate me!” and then turned around and headed to her room to shed a few tears alone. Perhaps while she was up there she texted a few friends to tell them about the Meanest Mom on the planet or perhaps she went on her computer and Googled “Why I should be able to spend the night at a friend’s house?” and then found about 450,000 mommy bloggers who have written about the subject and how those moms let their kids go to sleepovers and then she was preparing a full presentation on PowerPoint to show me why this is such an injustice to all of humanity ....more

Manaqish | Jordanian Zaatar Flatbread ~ J for Jordan

In my journey around the world on a culinary tour, my next stop was in Jordan for J. While it was overdose of geography and history rolled in one when I was reading about the different Arabic countries and their cuisine, I decided I would simply stick to Jordan. I had earlier wanted to do Japan, then seeing how there was hardly anything that I would be able to make, decided to settle for something that was simple ....more
