Homemade {All Natural} Dog Treats

Yes, we even try to treat our pups in a healthy way.photo(21)

Because store bought dog treats have chemicals and preservatives in them (and are also expensive) I have started making my own.

1 cup organic peanut butter
1/2 cup organic coconut oil (warmed)
1 cup organic wheat flour
4 fresh  eggs
1/2 cup Chia seeds

I plan on  incorporating shredded carrots and kale for added nutrition when the growing season gets going but for now they are only the 5 ingredients.photo(23)

Preheat the oven to 350*.  Melt the coconut oil in the microwave for about 45 seconds. There are lots of reasons I use coconut oil (you can find information here, here, and here. While not scholarly they get the point across).

Then stir in the peanut butter.  This warms the peanut butter and makes it easier to work with.  Then simply add in the rest of the ingredients and stir.   I add in the chia seeds because they are high in ogmega-3s which are a good way to increase energy in pets (information here).

The ‘dough’ should be the consistency of a cookie dough.  If too crumbly add a bit of water, if too wet add in more flour.

Form small disks in your hand and place on a cookie sheet (no need to grease first).    They will not rise so you can put them very close together. Bake for 10 minutes or until browned on top.   I get about 30 treats per batch.

Our dogs love them.  They usually hang out in the kitchen while I am making them hoping to shake me down for one (or more) and after their snack…happy, happy, happy.
