Houston is into Health and Wellness in a Big Way

24 dietitians, physicians and therapists from Texas Children's Hospital recently collaborated to write the book, The Family Guide to Fighting Fat: A Parent's Guide to Handling Obes...

This book is a comprehensive and authoritative guide to family weight management and smart nutrition.

During a recent interview on the Houston Chronicle, Dawn Bunting, a registered dietician, assistant director of Clinical Nutrition Services and certified specialist in pediatric nutrition in the Department of Food and Nutrition Services at Texas Children's Hospital, gave a few suggestions on the family approach to food and eating:

1. Parents aren’t to blame for their child’s obesity, but they do “play a key role. Parents need to role model good nutrition.”

2. A family approach “lays a good foundation from the beginning. It helps stress the importance of children needing well-balanced diets. I think the family setting provides the most opportunity for both nutrition and physical activity.”

3. When parents are talking to their kids about nutrition, they need to “start young and start early. But if you are just starting and you have a 15-year-old, you have to approach it more cautiously.”

Studies show families can have the biggest and most important influence on both the food children eat and how much physical activity they get.

From the book:

“By taking smaller steps that become new, healthy habits, you can create positive, lasting change. Be patient with yourself on this journey and you’ll be amazed at how great your accomplishments can be! The ROAD to success awaits you and your family.”

Not surprisingly, Houston is also the site for the upcoming 2008 Wellness Symposium, sponsored by the Houston Wellness Association, which promises to be the most unique two-day healthcare event of its kind in the country.

Never before has a Symposium brought together so many diverse leaders from the Private, Public, Not-For-Profit, and Medical and Academic sectors for the simple purpose of Translating Knowledge into Collaborative Action to enhance the health of the residents of their community.
