How BlogHer '12 Helped A Homeless Man
By AllBeingsEverywhere on August 04, 2012
BlogHer '12 was winding down and oh, how my stomach had expanded!
I'd spent the past three days sampling every goodie available. From the make-your-own-s'mores to the soy sauce ice cream at the Kikkoman booth, I was a no-holds-barred tasting machine. What I couldn't eat, I had in my overflowing swag bag, ready to feed my kids.
Feeling lucky that BlogHer '12 was held in my hometown of NYC, I was lugging my bags on the subway at Rockefeller Center when a homeless man approached me.
"Can you spare any change?" he asked.
"Are you hungry?" I replied.
"What do you have?" he asked.
What did I have! Among the vibrator, the giant bottle of Lysol, the Arm & Hammer Whitening Booster, the wipes for menopausal hot flashes ("You don't need this -- yet," the rep had smiled, handing me three packages at once), I had enough granola bars, cookies, fruit roll ups, and calcium chews to feed an army.
"Have what you want," I exclaimed, thrilled to be able to help.
Faced with the offerings, the man reached out and took a single Greek yogurt bar. "This is all I need," he said.
Watching him walk away, I thought of my favorite sessions of the conference: the Bloganthropy Awards, the International Activist BlogHer Scholarship presentation, Travel Philanthropy, and the Women Influencers as Change Agents Keynote. I was reminded that change begins at home, and sometimes the simplist opportunities to give are staring us right in the face in our own backyard.
My wish for us all as we head home this weekend is that we take all the goodness we received and spread it far and wide. Be a voice for change, no matter how small, no matter where you find it!
See you next year, BlogHer sisters!
