How to Celebrate a Non-Valentines Day.

I am sort of the Scrooge of Valentine's Day or maybe a better description is the Valentine's Day Grinch. If I could, I would probably go around to all of the stores and bag up all of the Valentine's Day stuff and burn it. And no it is not because I lack "love" in my life or do not cherish the man I am married to. In fact it is quite the opposite. I am madly, deeply and passionately in love with him but  I can honestly say there is nothing I find appealing to this day. I truly find it to be a joke.

So when my husband sent me todays Urban Dictionary word of the day (which always includes a definition) I was extremely excited. Well I was excited once I read the definition. You see the word of the day is "Valentine's Day", so at first glance, my initial thought was, "Really? Really? Why on earth would he send this to me?,"  but then I decided that he knows me better than anyone so if he sent it then there must be more to it. But rather than reword it I think I will just share it with all of you, so here it is:

FEBRUARY 14

"A Pointless and worthless day invented by Hersheys Confectionary Co and Joining forces with Teleflora Florists and Corbans Wine Makers just so they can profit out of Wine, Cholocates and Flowers, while single people suffer at the clutches of the hands of this evil and corrupt capitalist-orientated day that is not even a fucking holiday period.
Valentines Day should be banned and all those celebrating it shot."

This of course brought a huge smile to my face and a little chuckle knowing that I am not the only one out there that finds this "holiday" ridiculous. Which then got me to thinking, "What can I write about and say that would be worthy of this day?" Hmm....well last year I wrote "I Am So Over Valentine's Day -- Top Ten Things Not to Do", which again I could easily come up with a list of things you SHOULD NOT do today, but it was a conversation with one of my friends this morning that really inspired me.

Even though I am not fond of this day, I am careful about sharing my despise for it to those who really do love it. In fact some of you will be very happy to know that instead of stating my usual "Bah Humbug, Valentine's Day" status update on Facebook, I carefully wrote "Happy Valentine's Day to those who enjoy this day, and to those of you who don't, Happy Oregon Day!!! :)" And to top that off I haven't even pulled out the t-shirt today (see picture below).

Anyway, the point being that in being careful with not hurting others feelings on this über great day, I cautiously asked my friend if he and his wife were into Valentine's Day. He said no but they do have a tradition. Instead of going out to a nice fancy dinner they go to this local taco place that is awful to look at but has great food and then they go to a divey bar and have a drink. I have to admit, I was incredibly impressed with that. He did not go out and get her flowers or buy her candy or plan this incredibly romantic dinner for two at the best steak house. No, instead he takes out for cheep tacos and a shady drink. LOVE IT!!!

And as previously stated I was inspired, inspired to share with you all three great things I think should be done to celebrate a Non-Valentine's Day and here they are:

  1. 1 - Have [fill in a fast-food or greasy burger joint here] for dinner - DO NOT go out to a nice dinner. Why go out and either struggle to find reservations or sit in the waiting area for hours to have a nice dinner for two. Why not either stay home and cook yourself or even better, have Taco Bell. ;)
  2. 2 - Buy her shoes if you must spend money - DO NOT buy anyone flowers or candy. Seriously if my husband were to show up with flowers or candy today I might shoot him. I don't want anything that every other girl out there he has ever been with has received and especially on a day where he is told "HE MUST." Nope, instead if he must spend money on me today, shoes will make me happy. But in reality I really don't want anything bought for me today, even though in reality he is buying me something a bit larger and more expensive today, but that is for another post.  ;)
  3. 3 -Have sex with the one you love - not because you have to because it is Valentine's Day, but because you actually want to and enjoy it. Never, ever do it because you have to. Even today.  There is no need for red lingerie, though if you or he likes it, maybe you could pull out some black lace or white cotton, whichever you prefer.

No matter what you do today, do it because you want to--not because it is a "holiday". Be happy, live well, love much and laugh often. Not just today, but every day.
