How I Do My Hair, in Three Easy Steps

I think I've reached almost every woman's version of Nirvana. I, Heather Barmore, have found the perfect combination of hair products to make me, Heather Barmore -- she who is notoriously unhappy with everything -- fairly happy with my hair. Though first I feel like I should go back to 1994 when I had grand delusions of having long flowing blonde locks. Every time I got a relaxer and a haircut I'd end up with a case of whiplash from shaking my tresses around like I was in some Pantene commercial. Fortunately, I have since recovered from that particular phase.

I actually happened on this three-step process accidentally and didn't notice how well it was working until literally the other day, when someone asked if this was my real hair. Since no one has noticed my hair in months, I thought it was a joke, but no, it was not. Apparently what I was doing was working because more than one person commented on the state of my hair in less than 48 hours. I guess it looked better? I dunno. All I know is that the following day I did what I had been doing for the last three weeks and voila! It looked the same. And because I was and am generally pleased with the results, I've declared that this will be The Way for me to do my hair -- why change a good thing?

Here's what I do:

1) My routine relies on three products (from left to right) and one tool: Carol's Daughter Tui Herbal Shampoo, Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding (I swear by this stuff), Carol's Daughter Tui Hair Smoothie, a wide tooth comb.

2) Wash hair and condition with the Tui Hair Smoothie. Comb it through with the wide tooth comb. For extra conditioning, I leave it in for a few minutes while I do other things. Rinse.

3) Take a scoop of the curly pudding (more or less, depending on how much hair you have) and put it through your hair paying careful attention to the edges, ends and the middle of your head where -- if you're me -- you forget that you have hair and usually end up with an awesome dry patch in the middle.

4) Working out from your natural part, take sections of hair and twist. I will also add that I have been known to switch this up a bit depending on my mood. Sometimes I break it up into smaller sections and comb curly pudding through and it produces tighter curls. But if it's just a regular day I do it this way.

5) Wrap hair with a silk scarf. If you're washing your hair at night, then leave it on overnight. If it's morning, do this to your hair and then go about your normal morning routine. I did this while baking/doing the dishes/abusing Netflix. Be sure to really look like an idiot.

6) Take out twists and finger comb.

7) Fin!

 a) If you're like me and you cannot stand to have your hair down all day long and/or your hair grows throughout the day then put it on top of your head and call it a day.

And that is how I do my hair. In the end my curls are more defined and less likely to frizz. It allows me to have my hair natural without it being a big deal and my God, I could go on for pages about how in some circles it's a big deal. Regardless, I like it. It suits me and my lifestyle and I'm pretty pleased as punch.

I probably should have added a disclaimer onto this post that this took me a) FIVE years (this post was written five years and one week after I did the big chop) to grow hair this long and find this routine and b) You have to do what works for your hair.

I feel like I have tried every natural product under the sun. For example I did the kinky curly thing for three months and hated it. But I wanted to continue because they were all natural, etc. but it just didn't work for my hair. So yeah, Miss Jessie's products aren't all natural. I wonder if I'll get some sort of fine for doing that. But really there was trial and error and a lot of moments when I came thisclose to getting a relaxer because straight hair would solve all of my problems.

I know that in the African-American community hair and what we do with it and how other people see it can be a sensitive subject but really do what you feel you need to do with your hair. I'm just showing off what I do with mine but we all do not have the same hair. Heck, I don't even have a similar hair type to my mother, aunts and grandmother so I couldn't even discuss hair products with them. Totally long winded but do what works for your hair as you like.

The end.

I have tried every product under the sun it seems, even the ones that people swear by, and I always sort of resigned myself to believing that I just had "bad hair."  It wasn't until this week -- this week! -- that I finally figured out what products work with my hair, where my hair looked good enough that even I couldn't believe it was growing out of my head.  I became even more excited when a total stranger stopped me to ask me about my hair, and couldn't believe that I hadn't put any chemicals in my hair, or done an elaborate twist-out.

As you can tell, I'm thrilled.

So -- to your point -- for my INCREDIBLY thick, INCREDIBLY coarse hair, I've finally settled on Kinky Curly products:  Kinky Curly Knot Today, put all over soaking wet hair, followed by Kinky Curly Curling Custard -- the result is spirally curls that are soft to touch.  First time ever, I tell you -- ever!

But admittedly, these products might only work for *my* hair.  Also?  THEY AIN'T CHEAP.

(but you can find them here, if you want to try: http://kinky-curly.com/)

Thanks for this, Heather, by the way -- as you know, you've been my natural curl guru!

to make peace with your hair, to find a routine that works for you.  My daughter swears by Miss Jessie's products and Carol's daughter.  She likes the versatility.  Since cutting her locks, she does braids, curly, kinky, or straight depending on her mood.  She's even got a wig thrown in, too.

Congrats on finding your hair routine.

I love this post! I feel like good hair care is such a closely guarded secret sometimes or you have to pass through the expensive gatekeepers at the natural hair care salons for a solution.

But I'm wondering how much do the success of these products depend on the texture of your hair? I live in NYC and the night I went to see Chris Rock's movie Good Hair they were passing out sample products and all of the women on the front had this beautiful curly hair. But I kept thinking to myself if your hair is rather coarse it won't come out looking like that. It was also interesting that the women passing out the samples gave one to my friend who's hair looked a lot "softer/finer" than my own and did not offer it to me. My hair is pretty coarse and I've worn it natural for about 13 years but I still have an intense love/hate relationship with my hair. I wore it long for a while but I always had lots of trouble with dry scalp when it was longer. Today I wear a short fro which seems to be the easiest thing for me to do, particularly working out everyday. I guess what I'm really saying is some of the hair care products on the market really need to speak to hair texture so women can know what to realistically expect.

I'm old enough to remember the days of the fated pressing comb and the sizzle near my scalp! Geez!

All I can say is that it is beautiful to be alive in a time where I can be...whatever! Some days, I blow straight, some days I straight iron and other days I just let the stuff dry into a fro. Either way....Thank God for free-DOM!!!

Will check out those products as well.

Great post! Thanks!

You look fabulous and your routine is somewhat similar to mine except for the four additional products I add. You've inspired me to try a pared down approach so thanks!

I only recently decided to stop fighting my curls, and I'm always on the lookout for new and better ways to take care of them. I love your look-- and thanks for the advice!

Thank you. I mean really, I can't think of anything else to say. It's much too hard to find the right products to tame the frizz when I wear my hair curly.

Oh, friends. Romans. Countrymen.

You get my drift. The issue of finding your hair nirvana (nice word there, Karen) is an incredible thing. Normally, Heather, I hate having my hair down all day, too. It actually is in about thirteen different positions during the day when I have failed to get the right amount of product in it.

You look super cute, Heather. Next time we room together I am trying out some of those products. Unless I can get some samples which, hello, black hair care professionals! Help a sista out so we can find out what works!

I just discovered my hair nirvana as well -- it involves Kinky Curly products (the KNOT Today and the Pudding).  I combined them for the first time today, and I swear I heard angels sing. FINALLY.

Congrats!
