How I Support My Soccer Stars

Soccer season is beginning. For this family it means a big commitment and a lot of running around. However, we love soccer, our children love soccer, and we believe that sports are an important part of childhood.  This year four of our children will be playing. That means a lot of practices and being on the field nearly every night of the week. It also means Saturdays will be spent cheering them on at their games.

As a soccer Mom, I am committed to supporting my children throughout the soccer season. It means that not only am I their chauffer, but I am also their number one fan.  I always want to encourage them to do their best while at the same time having fun and enjoying the game. I encourage them to believe in themselves and the abilities they were gifted with.  I am always right there to cheer them on for every game, to tell them how proud of them I am, and to make sure they are always ready to play their best

For my four soccer stars, they each are gifted athletically. Two of them have been told numerous times they have a future in soccer if they keep going with it. These two live and breathe the sport.  Yes, they are quite competitive, but they love it, and for them the competition is part of the fun.  Our home is littered with their trophies and awards. We leave them out all year long because they are proud of their achievements, and so am I.

Sports build confidence. It helps young kids to feel a part of something. It builds their self-esteem and encourages them to be healthy physically and emotionally.  My children are always happier when they are active. Soccer is one way our family bonds and stays active throughout the year. Even my children who are not on a team enjoy playing. They love to kick the ball around at practices and games. While three of the girls prefer dance, I do see that several of my little ones will be soccer players like their older siblings in the not too distant future.

During soccer season it is imperative that I make sure my athletes are well fed and hydrated. We are a big fan of the Gatorade products and make sure that our kids have a bottle at every game. In the southern summer heat, they need to stay well fueled and hydrated during practices and games alike. The kids also happen to love the taste of Gatorade, so it is a win- win for this soccer Mom.  I never have to worry if they are getting enough to drink.

The awesome people at Gatorade have teamed up with BlogHer to give away a $100 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card to one of my readers.  It is easy to enter, just let me know how you support your athletes through the highs and lows!! And once you’re done you can also visit the Gatorade Moms page and take the pledge to help young athletes become the best they can be and for every pledge Gatorade will donate $1 (up to $10,000) to the Women's Sports Foundation!

I always make sure they understand that it's a team sport and it's only a game and it doesn't define who they are

I make sure to be there for all their practices and games. I encourage them and listen to them when they are frustrated and feeling like quitting. We get through each low and celebrate each high.

we try to focus on what we do best or how we can do better when they don't play as well. It seems to work!

I remind them that winning is not the goal. Fun is the goal. I also encourage them to do more active things as individuals or with friends rather than to participate in competitive activities.

Raising them to be good losers as well as good winners. Letting them know that you can't always win, but that you always play your best.

When anyone asked who the best player or players were on my son's team, the coach taught the players to respond with "it takes a team to win the game and not just one player" and they were all considered equal. This team really won as a team and lost as a team. My kids have never played on a more united team than the one this coach taught.

My daughter's high school basketball team was 0 for two SEASONS, so I consider myself an expert on supporting an athlete thru the lows! You just have to be there, let them know you care and remind them that sports can always be just as much about the friendships they make as about the total in the wins columm!

I've been a soccer mom for more than a decade now. Gulp! I supported them by being an involved parent, fundraising for the team, supporting coaches, planning tournament trips, etc. A lot goes on behind the scenes to make sports events happen, and it made soccer a part of our lives instead of just an activity.

We all sit out in the wind, rain, and cold to watch our football player play his games every weekend. It's a lot more fun on the nice weather days!
