Health experts have long been telling us that in order to stay healthy we need to get at least 8 hours sleep each night. There is a lot of contradictory advice out there claiming that different people need a different amount of sleep. Therefore the 8 hour rule doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone.

You will know how many hours you need based upon how you feel when you wake up. Do you feel refreshed and ready to take on the day? If not it’s a good sign you aren’t getting as much sleep as you should be.

The effects of too little sleep

It may not seem like a big deal losing just one hour’s sleep a night. However, you might just be surprised at the negative effects it can have on your body.

Are you trying to lose weight? If so you could find that lack of sleep isn’t helping. Sleep deprivation has a negative impact on the hormones in your body, creating an imbalance. You’ll find you are hungrier when you haven’t slept properly and this goes back to our caveman days. The body thinks you aren’t sleeping because you need to search for food. Therefore it starts to lower your metabolism and clings on to fat. So if you’re trying desperately to shed the pounds but you aren’t getting anywhere, sleep could be to blame.

According to the Daily Mail, losing an hour of sleep a night can literally take years off your life expectancy. It causes you to become more depressed and emotionally unstable. This is again down to the negative effect lack of sleep has on your hormones.

There’s a reason the saying ‘You’ll feel better after a good night’s sleep’ was created. Being tired drains your energy and causes you to think more negatively throughout the day.

It isn’t just mental health problems you need to worry about either. As stated on the NHS website, sleep deprivation can lead to serious health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Diabetes Type 2 can be caused if you get less than five hours sleep a night. The body starts to change the way it processes glucose and this is what leads to diabetes. Also, if you continually don’t get enough sleep, it causes havoc with your immune system. So you’ll also be more likely to develop colds and the flu.    

As you can see, a lack of sleep really can cause a lot of problems for the body. To ensure you sleep better, make sure you are first sleeping in a comfortable bed. Your room should be tidy and organised and it could be a good idea to buy a scented lavender plug in. Avoiding staring at a computer screen before you go to bed will also help. Don’t let your health suffer – make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep so you’re ready to take on the day.
