I've been meaning to try this for ages, and I finally got around to making lipstick from non-toxic Crayola crayons and organic coconut oil. It took less than three minutes per color to make.

I bought seven small, stacking, round, clear plastic screw-top containers at The Container Store for $1.99 -- they seemed perfect for making a few different shades of lipstick/balm.
Get a quart-size saucepan and fill with about an inch or so of water. Place a Pyrex cup in the pan and heat on low-medium heat. Place the crayon and coconut oil in the cup. This is how you'll melt them together. I used a toothpick as stirrer. The crayon/coconut oil will become liquid is about 30 seconds. Pour into container while it's still liquid. It will harden very quicken.
The recipe for opaque lipstick is one inch of crayon to a quarter teaspoon of coconut oil. For a sheerer lip balm, add more coconut oil, up to half a teaspoon. You can add in peppermint oil or any other flavored oil if you want; just make sure it's food grade. I skipped the oil.

You can go with the shade of the crayon itself, or you can mix more than one crayon to make your own custom shades.
This is a fun project to do with your daughter, granddaughter, with a friend or even on your own. It's a great way to try out a lipstick shade that you're not sure will work for you before you spend the money to buy it.
See my blog post for details and step-by-step pix. Have fun! Let me know what shades you make :)
