Spring Gifts: How to Make Seed Tape Strips

Last spring while perusing seed catalogs and my local garden centers, I came across seed tape strips. These thin strips of paper are dotted with perfectly spaced seeds, reducing the need to thin seedlings. Intrigued, I decided to make my own for a fraction of the cost.

First, I have to confess. I didn't invent this craft. I actually googled it a few months ago and came across a dozen really wonderful tutorials. Like any good "recipe," this tutorial has a bit of this and a bit of that. While some used newspaper (as did I), others used toilet paper or paper towels. Some used Elmer's glue, but I stuck with my flour paste.

How to Make Seed Strip Tape
(or Salad in a Tin)

These little Salads in a Tin make a perfect gift for the budding gardener in your life. Just be sure to save a few strips for yourself.

I just want to say ditto to all of the, "Brilliant!" "Cool!" and "Wow!" 's from the comments above. Such a great idea and I really can't wait to try it.

Thanks so much for sharing it.

I save a couple for myself and have to say, they were great for the kids to plant. Maybe this year we won't have radishes and oregano growing in the middle of the yard.

If you make a few at a time, they're really easy to store. When I gave them as gifts, I added a simple ribbon and outside label and they were good to go.

I'm so glad you liked the idea!

I hadn't thought of flowers, but that would be a great way to use up extra seeds. You could do your own flower mix with sizes and colors.

Great idea!

It's hard to justify the cost if it doesn't save you money. This project took about a half hour or so and used a lot of things I already had laying around the house.

Love it. It would actually be pretty tough to kill this particular mix. Mostly because all they need is a bit of water and some sun. Totally low maintenance.

It would actually make an adorable gift for someone just starting out with gardening. You can even add a little trowel, a pair of gloves and a cute planter and it's everything they need. Except dirt. ;)

OMG! What a wonderful way to share something fresh with friends. I bet these could also be put in a window garden. You are truly amazing, thank you for this wonderful gift idea. I love how everything is color coded to the veggie..I bet I could do this for flowers too.

You are totally talented enough to do this. Do you want to know how I know? Because my HUSBAND made some with me. The man is so non-crafty that I think he ended up with heartburn. But, his seed tape strips were perfect.

And if they don't work (which they will) I'll send a little care package. ;)

LOL...I have to say, everyone who got them were pretty happy. And they were easy to store. I just stacked the tins and then had a great hostess give at a moment's notice.

Because I sometimes do hostess gifts.

Because I'm a total nerd and need to bribe my hosts.

That was the best part. Counting the little tins and the seeds, this project only cost about $3 to make. They would have been even less packaged in a cute little box.
