How Much Do You Care About Eating Raw Food?

Everyone eats raw food. Every time you grab a juicy apple or slice into a fantastic ripe tomato you're eating raw food. Not only do we all eat raw food, but anyone with the most basic knowledge of good health knows that raw food is loaded with nutrients.

So if we all eat raw food, and we know it's more nutritious, the question becomes how much of your food do you believe needs to be raw? According to Wikipedia on raw foodism (also called rawism) a growing number of people believe that a healthy diet should include at least 75% or more raw foods. Raw foodism is based on a belief that raw foods contain digestive enzymes which are essential for optimum health. When food is heated above a certain temperature (104-120F) these enzymes are destroyed. As Wikipedia explains, "Adherents of raw foodism believe that consumption of uncooked foods encourages weight loss and prevents and/or heals many forms of sickness and chronic diseases."

Some of my favorite tastes are raw foods like avocados, fresh tomatoes, and spinach, but I love too many cooked foods to ever think of giving them up. However, lately I've been noticing some raw food creations that I'd love to sample.

One of the most committed raw food chefs on the web is Ani Phyo, and her site has a wealth of information for anyone wanting to sample raw food recipes. Ideal Bite featured her latest recipe for Cashew Chipotle Cheese.

I agree we're lucky to have so many healthful food options available in recent times. I also think the higher quality the food is that people have access to, the easier it is to enjoy food close to it's natural state. Glad you like the recipes. I was impressed with how many fascinating raw recipes I found.

It's funny how the way an idea is presented can have a dramatic effect on our willingness to accept it. When I think of a mostly raw diet as a restrictive rule, I instantly crave braised short ribs. But offer me a beautiful heirloom tomato salad with a well-chosen glass of biodynamic wine, and I'd be delighted to dine with you all summer long. As food choice goes, I like the "more is more" philosophy - and along those lines, it's been great to have CSAs and farmers markets offering such a wide variety of healthy food choices to a wide variety of people in recent times. Kalyn, thanks for gathering some enticing looking recipes to put those ingredients to good use in their birthday suits! I might toss some grilled shrimp on top of that broccoli salad and not look back, but I'll be very glad to have the recipe.

One reason I love to have a vegetable garden is that the abundance of vegetables produced almost forces me to concentrate on getting more of them into my diet! Totally agree that we could all benefit from eating more fruits and veggies.

I think an all raw food diet is extreme and not something all people should follow.  I have friends who are vegan or raw foodists.  There's no doubt that either is usually a healthier option (depending on food choices) than the Western diet, but I don't think people need to go to either extreme.  Raw food isn't at all appealing to me when the temperatures are consistently below freezing -- or in single digits or below zero!  However, I think we could all benefit from eating more fruits and vegetables, with a balance between cooked and raw.

I feel best when my diet includes lots of fruits and vegetables -- cooked and raw.

Your Middle Eastern Tomato salad is a favorite of mine.  I first saw a version of it some years ago called Israeli salad.  I've also seen it called a Greek Village Salad.  Whatever it's called, it's a basic in my summer meals.  I could (and sometimes do) eat it every day.  Sometimes I add chickpeas to it, occasionally cooked shrimp or chicken and sometimes bread -- and then it becomes panzanella or fatoush.

Even the ritual of cooking is something I would miss immensely!

Apart from being a big believer in "everything in moderation," I agree with you: I love many raw foods, including avocados, tomatoes and most fruit. But I can't imagine giving up my favorite cooked dishes.

The thought of eating food in it's purest form is definitely appealing, but . . .

And since I'm so veggie inclined, it seems easy enough. But I've had raw "cake" and I was sorely disappointed.

Plus, as I'm sitting here with a belly full of baked potato, I'm not sure I'd want to sacrifice that delicious warm feeling.

When you were eating more raw food, did you feel more energetic or think you were getting more nutrition?

Yes, I agree. I use to eat so much raw food before, but now I eat less then before. And people around me starting to pay attention on raw food.
