How to Recognize Official Sponsors of #BlogHer16

We've always been very transparent about the fact that #BlogHer conferences couldn't exist without our official sponsors. Not only do they bring all sorts of fun activities, cool products to try and extra special events happening throughout the weekend, but their sponsorship allows us to charge you only about 1/3 the cost of hosting you. (Yes, that means if we wanted to break even on registration alone, we'd have to triple the early bird price.)

And for the last several years we have become very transparent about the fact that every year there are a few folks who decide to produce "outboard" events off-site during our conference, rather than be a part of the conference itself.

Essentially they're exploiting the nearly $2MM dollars we spend to create an experience you're all willing to travel into town for, without feeling the need to contribute to the event, or support the full community of attendees. If you're curious why outboarding is considered an unethical practice in the events industry this post is probably the best I've ever read on the subject, better than any of mine.

So you can certainly go read up if you're interested, but mostly we just want you to know that if this is something you care about, there are ways to tell if a company or brand or agency are officially supporting this event and all our attendees, or not, namely:

Look for our trademarked name and logo in communications
Look for info to come in emails from us
Look for the brand or company on our sponsor page

If they're official, they're allowed to use our trademarked logo. If they're official they can just ask if you're going to BlogHer when they do outreach. If they're not, they can't. That trademark protection is really our one legal recourse, and we try to stay right on top of any violations. If they're not official, they'll probably use some convoluted language like, "Hey, are you going to be in Los Angeles with lots of bloggers next week?"

If they're official, you probably got an email from us that included them, and they're going to be on our sponsor page on the web site or mobile app. If they're not, they're not.

That's really it; it's pretty simple. (I use this trick at SXSW, too, which has an outboarding problem about 100x as bad as ours! "Hey girl, coming to Austin?" ...wink wink...)

Here's the thing: This isn't your problem as an attendee, it's ours as a business...until any of our attendees feel misled and/or confused... and every year some people do.
