Do You Wear Yoga Pants -- When You're Not Doing Yoga? Is That OK?

Does this sound familiar? It's Tuesday and you don't have any plans to leave the house so you think, Eh, I'll just throw on my yoga pants today, which is fine until you realize that you need to run to the grocery/post office/coffee shop and so you do and you run into your ex/your mother-in-law/that woman from the carpool line who always looks like a supermodel. And you think, Argh, why didn't I get dressed?

Good question. Especially since there's no reason that yoga pants have to be synonymous with staying in your pajamas all day.

It is entirely possible to wear yoga pants for more than yoga; the key is to choose the right pants and to be thoughtful about how you style them. Let's start with the pants.

Athleta yoga pants

Don't skimp on quality. If you're going to rely on yoga pants as your go-to for daywear, spend the money to get a really well-made pair. I like Athleta's line of yoga wear; their pieces will stand up to even the most grueling wash-and-wear schedule. Pictured at left: Chaturanga yoga pant, $69 (some colors on sale for $49.99).

Choose a flattering style. A wide or fold-over waistband is perfect if you're camouflaging a bit of a tummy; a drawstring waist is also good if you carry your weight in the middle. A boot-cut leg balances larger hips and thighs.

Triple-check the fit. Don't be afraid to go up a size -- you can always cut the tag out later -- but never ever wear yoga pants that bind across the rear; the fit should be snug but not tight. But don't go up too many sizes; yoga pants are not meant to be baggy.

Opt for a substantial fabric. A slightly more heavy-duty material -- one that includes some Lycra, for example -- will hold everything in place better and give you a smoother line. A more substantial fabric will also wear better and last longer, which matters if this is going to be your go-to look for day.

How do you style your yoga pants for day? Keep your look casual and athletic, even if you're not planning to do any actual yoga. Avoid baggy, oversized tops; pair yoga pants with fitted tanks and tees, and add a slim hoodie or jacket for warmth. Keep shoes casual and lightweight; thong sandals or athletic-inspired flats are perfect. Walking or running shoes are also fine, especially if your day will involve lots of activity (chasing kids at the park, for example, or running errands). Don't try to dress your yoga pants up with ballet flats or a really beautiful sweater; if you want to wear those pieces, swap your yoga pants for some dark-rinse jeans.

Do you wear yoga pants as daywear? How are you making them work for your life? If you're not a yoga pants girl, what's your go-to for a casual day at home? Sheila Dowd is looking for suggestions and strategies for the first video in BlogHer's Putting it All Together series -- share your tips for styling your yoga pants in the comments here, or at Xiaolin Mama.

People are way less formal these days (who except at management level wears a suit to work anymore?) so I think yoga pants work for many environments like the post office, grocery store and kid-friendly places like the zoo but I only wear them to exercise or go to the store to get milk. What bothers me is when women wear ill-fitting yoga pants and force everyone to see their camel toe (or the french would say - direct translation - pants that talk).

To me, nothing says "I've given up on myself" like wearing yoga pants all the time.

They may be comfortable, but with all the "advances" in jeans and trousers and Lycra and all that, jeans are pretty comfortable and look about %1000 times better.

I am a stay at home mom of 5 (yes, 5)and I do my darndest to not leave the house in sweats or yoga pants unless I am actually going to the gym.

No matter what you may think, you do not look cute in your yoga outfit, no matter how pricey or matched it is. It just looks lazy.

For heavens sake, Ladies, put some effort into it! If I can do it, so can you!

Is this a real question? I live in my Yoga pants :-) I could not live without them! I love them! The are comfortable, look great and remind me that i better get to the gym today.

I always see people at stores wearing yoga pants. This is such a pet peeve of mine! To me wearing yoga pants out in public is telling the world that you gave up on your apperance and you are lazy. I believe that you should always put effort in how you look.

That no matter what I'm wearing, I'm never bothered by what someone else is or where I have to go? I feel like I never look like a complete bum, so that's good enough. Haha.

I have a pair of Yoga pants from Althea that are THE most comfortable pants I've ever worn. Lovelovelove. I'll wear them out during the day. I'm usually following a child in a tutu, Transformers rain boots and some sort of color tights and superheroes shirt and costume jewelry - she steals all the attention. :)

I LOVE yp's and wear Hard Tail's and Lululemons. I would never wear them to work, a meal, etc. But for running around, absolutely. I swear they give me more energy and make me eat less.

BUT my secret for not being inappropriate (and staying warm) is wearing black silk long johns underneath. I look smooth, no VPL and am warm.

I love my yoga pants, just like everyone else, soooo comfy.  I practice yoga AND I have a full length mirror.  That is why I'm not wearing yoga pants out and about.  It's great for many, but definately not for me.  Khaki's and a v-neck cap-sleeve t-shirt, with a cardigan along is my ideal look.  Jeans and a t-shirt, with a hoody for going to the park, ball-game, etc.  (I got some flaws I want to keep to myself.)

You've identified precisely my issue with yoga pants: I'm not in the least opposed to a great pair of yoga pants for casual everyday running around (running errands, working from home, wrangling kids) -- but wearing them to church or an upscale restaurant, in place of real pants (or, even better, a dress or skirt) is Casual Friday at its worst.

So yes, I'm all for the intervention. And sadly, it's not just Vancouver that needs help.

Susan do you think you could come to Vancouver and we could create some sort of outreach/recovery program?

I HATE yoga pants as "fashion" and don't think they should be worn outside unless you are are heading to the gym. Here in Vancouver I've seen them at dinner parties, on restaurant servers and even at the theatre - big time NO NO in my book.

I think it depends on where you live. In the city I used to live in, there is no way I would wear yoga pants or sweats to the grocery store; I'd change into jeans. In the city we live in now, most of the people at the grocery store are wearing pajamas. That took some getting used to, and I have never worn pajamas to the grocery, but I am far more likely to wear my yoga pants to run errands in this town.

One thing I noticed when I spent several months traveling the US a few years back was that some cities are a lot more fashionable and others more relaxed. I think either is fine.

I was "caught" wearing my yoga pants everywhere in 2006. http://m.rockymountainnews.com/news/2006/aug/24/bs... ( http://m.rockymountainnews.com/news/2006/aug/24/bs... )

I now wear a different brand, but still believe they're the best choice for runaround gear, although perhaps only in Denver!

njgeiger 6 pts

I only wear them on gym days, but since I do all my errands on the way home from the gym - I swear the people who work in the bank and grocery store think I only own one outfit!  :)

I see a lot of women at my kids' school wearing workout pants.  Sometimes it looks great, sometimes horrific.  I think one rule of thumb would be to cover the butt with a long jacket or wrap.  Otherwise it looks like tights, shows panty lines, and can be positively indecent!  I think it's so much easier, and more flattering to just wear a dress, so I have dozens of comfy, pretty jersey dresses that I wear every day when it's time to go out.

Why all the hate when it comes to yoga pants outside the studio?  Most companies design their pants to transfer from studio to street.  I'm a daily yoga pant wearer and often times, they see more action than my jeans.  I'm not ready to sacrifice comfort when stylistically, yoga pants are more flattering than a lot of other pants I wear.  So, do I take the chance that I may get snide looks in the event I choose to grocery shop in my be present mobility pants rather than jeans?  I say yes, and have been complimented NUMEROUS times on the style and fit of the pants.  Especially when warm weather hits, I am highly likely to pair a pair of black mobility pants with a nice flowing tank or top and fit right in with the patio happy hour crowds.

I think that yoga pants are just fine for wear during the completion of daily tasks and errands. I even think they can look chic with a pair of ballet slippers and a tunic or a nice "flowy" top. If you have the right fit I don't see a huge difference between yoga pants and the cropped tights I own. www.einsteinonthebeach2.blogspot.com ( http://www.einsteinonthebeach2.blogspot.com )

Oprah did a makeover show a couple of seasons ago in which her fashion people put busy moms who had been wearing ratty old sweatpants and gross stained baggy tee shirts into black yoga pants, stylish walking sneakers and trendier athletic-cut tees and jackets.  These were meant to be outfits to drop the kids off at school and run a few errands. It was a vast improvement over what they had been wearing, and still comfortable.

I wrote about my love of yoga pants on our family blog in 2006 (which was actually one of the posts that got me noticed by this site!). The truth is that I AM a yoga lover AND I wear yoga pants whenever I damn well feel like it.

It's no secret that I don't care all that much about fashion. I'd actually love to be fashionable but I have no ability to put things together. It gets lost in translation. Add in my never-ending body issues and I'd really just like to hang out in yoga pants, please and thank you.

That said, my addition about fit is this: if you're actively doing yoga and regularly working out, check the fit again. Yoga pants not only lose their stretch eventually (even the best of brands after years of wash and wear) but you could also be losing inches that you're not even aware of! :)

Does anyone know where I can find a good yoga pant that comes in a long length? Every pair of yoga pants I've ever tried on are too short on me, and high water yoga pants are not cool. Help!

Like Julie, I'm not a fan of yoga pants as actual clothing -- it's just as easy to put on some dark-rinse jeans and a properly fitting tee or top as it is to toss on the yoga pants. Hearing you all say NO YOGA PANTS OUTSIDE THE GYM is making my entire week. Thank you.

but the one rule I have is this: No yoga pants outside the house unless I'm actually exercising. My BFF will happy to read this article, though, because she LOVES her yoga pants for day wear!

I reserve my yoga pants for actual yoga class or other gym-related activities. I dress in "real" clothes each day, regardless of my plans for the day. I see women all the time running errands about town wearing their gym clothes and yoga pants. I don't want to dress like that.

I love fashion and nice clothes. My go-to uniform on a daily basis is: cotton pants from jcrew or nice jeans, a t-shirt, and a nice cardigan (usually from jcrew also.) This isn't really dressed up but it is not gym clothes either!

I equate yoga pants to having the same function as sweat pants only yoga pants are currently in style while sweat pants are not. Even the term "sweat pants" seems icky to me despite having been in my vernacular for at least a decade.  I don't think of yoga pants being pajamas, but that is because I also didn't think of sweat pants being pajamas. Both, at least to me, represent quick options to throw on as one heads out the door to ride a bike, take a walk or run errands.  But even back in The Day when I wore sweat pants, I still made sure they weren't ripped, fit properly and coordinated with a tee, tank or hoodie (which back in the day was a hooded sweat shirt. Again with the sweat!)

The ones with the bleach stains?!

Had a conversation with someone the other day who is looking for 'sweat pants with a band around the bottom' for a better fit! Weren't they circa 80s or so?

Great post!

Oooh -- I. Live, In. Them!

And I consider myself fairly obsessive about fashion as well -- but when I'm at home writing during the day -- you betcherbippy that I am in either yoga pants or PJs! I won't wear the pajamas out to run errands, but I'll certainly wear yoga pants and throw together a quick, sporty look. I wouldn't go OUT-out in them, out to eat, etc...but for errands and such?  Oh yeahhhh. To work from my kitchen table -- absolutely -- comfort is the way to go!
