Hurricane Sandy: Superstorm causes coffins to rise from their graves

sandy the hurricaneCoffins have eerily risen from their graves in a cemetery struck by deadly Hurricane Sandy.

The superstorm was so strong the huge amount of water it unleashed swelled the ground and dislodged cement slabs covering the graves.

In the cemetary in Crisfield, Maryland, two caskets – one silver and one bronze – were visible above the ground.

More than 50 people have been killed in the storm and the cost of the clear up could be as much as £25 billion.

Millions are still without electricity and it is expected to take days before normal life can resume.

Residents living along the battered East Coast have begun taking their first steps back towards a daily routine.

New York buses have returned to the streets and the Stock Exchange reopened.

“We will get through the days ahead by doing what we always do in tough times – by standing together, shoulder to shoulder, ready to help a neighbour, comfort a stranger and get the city we love back on its feet,” New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

President Barack Obama was today visiting New Jersey to see the area near Atlantic City.

The storm has moved across Pennsylvania on a predicted path toward western New York State and Canada.
