I Am Not a Machine

I’m very big on To Do lists. And whenever I feel overwhelmed, I plan my schedule pretty thoroughly– during my morning runs and yoga classes, my mind is often busy plotting out the day. Between commissioned pieces, packing and moving, various errands, projects, and the general need to keep up my Etsy stock, I’ve been relying more than usual on this super structured mentality.

Which has enabled me to do things like finish up this little In Bloom quilt, which I’d cut and prepped months ago. Somehow it got sidelined by other projects, and I got it in my head that it simply had to be finished before the move (the first move, to be exact).

However, if we’re being honest here, the plan (according to my arbitrary but strict schedule) was to have this done Saturday afternoon– and I only finished it last night. Thing is, sometimes I can’t resist… the rest of life. Brunch with one of my favorite people at a restaurant serving the best french toast on the planet? How could I say no. A spontaneous day at the beach, a picnic by the Charles River, a weekday lunch with another one of my favorite people…. you just don’t turn these sorts of things down. I’m not saying I’m super chill and that I don’t become a hermit for a couple days to make up for it, but I’m training myself to just not feel bad about that type of ‘wasted’ time. That is the stuff of a happy, full, and unexpected life.

And thank goodness for yarn projects– they’re quite conducive to more unstructured days. The above granny squares are for a Pinterest-inspired project. And my latest scrappy sweater…

…is coming along quite nicely. Especially considering the fact that I mainly work on it while watching the Real Housewives of NYC or Keeping Up with the Kardashians. No shame people, no shame.

Is that a blog post without a puppy picture?

Not quite. Someone went shopping while we were in NYC last weekend and got the VIP treatment (meaning a free pink polo shirt) when we discovered that the store owner’s name was– you guessed it– Martin.

Did I mention I’m moving? Yeah, not fun. But if you want to help lighten the load, check out my massive Etsy sale! Everything is 30% off with coupon code NEWHOME. The next time you hear from me, I’ll be in my temporary home– almost there! One step at a time…
