I Can't Stomach Comments About My Pregnant Stomach

Dear Mouthy Housewives,

I'm pregnant after 10 months of trying to conceive. We're very excited, but I have a problem with my husband's stupid friend and his wife. She stared at my stomach for months, asking if I was pregnant. I wasn't, and it was a sore spot. Then a month before we got pregnant, the guy started making comments, too. And it got awkward. "You're pregnant, huh?" "Uh, no. I'm not." "Riiiight." I wanted to knee him in the groin. Way to rub it in and imply that I'm fat.

Then when I was 5 weeks pregnant and not public with it yet, he said, "I can tell you're pregnant" in front of a group of friends. My husband awkwardly denied it, but it made us very uncomfortable. I'd like to tell him to stop making comments about my body, but my husband said we should just ignore it. Any advice?

Signed,

Shut Up About My Stomach

Dear Shut Up About My Stomach,

As we've said many, many times on The Mouthy Housewives, one should never, ever ask a woman if she's pregnant. Even if you're standing in a delivery room and see the woman's baby crowning in her nether regions, you shouldn't ask her if she's pregnant. But apparently Mr. and Mrs. No Boundaries haven't been reading our advice like they should be or they'd already know that. Losers.

That said, it's too bad your husband doesn't have your back in this case since it's his friend who's causing all of the trouble. I'm guessing hubby is one of those nice non-confrontational types you find in the Midwest, right? The kind who apologizes to the person who bumps into them in the grocery store? So adorable. And annoying when what you really need is an ass kicker.

If that's the case, you need to take matters into your own hands. You could do this in one of two ways.

Option 1: The Fun Way

The nosy couple is preoccupied with your body, so become preoccupied with theirs. For example, "Oh, hey, Jerome! I see your man boobs are filling out nicely! Are YOU pregnant? HAHAHAHAHA! Good luck nursing, man! Get some lanolin!"

or

"Looks like someone's gained a little weight in her butt! When's your due date, Sally? Are you carrying twins in that trunk of yours?"

Of course, with this option, you risk the chance that they'll never talk to you again, but it doesn't seem like a big loss. But if you don't want that to happen, you could try option 2.

Option 2: The Assertive Way

The next time they make an inappropriate comment, simply and firmly say, "Please stop making comments about my body. I don't like it." If they continue to do so, repeat it. If they still continue, either go back to Option 1 or tell your husband you don't want anything to do with them. After all, you're pregnant and the last thing you need is that kind of aggravation in your life.

Good luck working this out. We really hope you’re able to put a muzzle on these two people and move on with your pregnancy. And congratulations!

Best,

Wendi, TMH

Ha! I can relate! I remember after delivering my first, I was riding the hospital elevator down to the vending machines while my less-than-a-day-old infant slept off a milk binge. As it happened, there was one of those pregnancy classes getting ready to tour the maternity ward, and when they saw me they asked, "When are you due?" I said, "I've got news for you. This is what you look like AFTER delivery!" They all looked a bit pale and ddin't say another word.

I agree! Totally comment on his man-boobs! If you get a chance, throw up in his lap and say, ''oh, you're right, I AM pregnant!''
