I Don't Understand the Pro-Life Movement

Rather, I don't understand certain factions of the pro-life movement.  I mean, what is it they stand for, anyway?

For most of my life, I thought that pro-lifers believed life began at conception, and therefore it would be murder to abort a fetus at any stage.  This puts the needs of the fetus before the choice of the mother and her right to her body.  The crux of the argument is that at conception, a child is a child and no longer simply part of the mother's body.

Why, then, would some members of the pro-life movement choose to fight for a bill that proposes outlawing abortions after the first heartbeat can be medically detected?

i don't think prolifer's definition of life has ever changed... a baby is alive before there is a detectable heartbeat - absolutely - life begins at conception, with a tiny being with DNA that is unique from both her parents. The only difference between an embryo and a fetus is the size and level of dependence. Some prolifers might fight for a bill to protect babies at different levels of dependence (such as the Born Alive bill - or fighting against partial birth abortion) - that doesn't mean that they don't think the very tiniest ones don't deserve protection, it just means that there is momentum to soften hearts towards the sadness of later term abortions right now.
Fwiw, that frog analogy is false too (check it out on snopes :)

I am pro choice and always have been and probably always will be. The pro lifers are people who want to push their morality on everyone.

When these pro-lifers murder abortion doctors how can they justify that? The doctor has a heart beat. It's hypocrisy, swapping one one form of murder (as they view it) for another form of murder. if you ask me.

And I agree that womens reproductive rights are being erroded little by little. I wrote an entry about it recently.

I believe the goal here is to erode a woman's right to choose one small piece at a time. This erosion of women's rights will not stop until the right to choose has been abolished. Pro-life groups will not stop until this is achieved.

It is equivalent to the old frog in the boiling water analogy. If you put a frog in boiling water it will jump out. If you put a frog in cold water and slowly heat the water to boiling it won't realize it until it is too late.

Pro-life believers are struggling to find a definition of life that noone can refute. Once they define something as having life or being human than the life has rights equal to the mother. The problem is the beginning of life is a spiritual as well as a science question.

In reaching for this elusive spritual definition of life, pro-life believers are trying to impose their spiritual beliefs on others. This is where I have a fundemental issue. Pro-life believers have no right to impose their spiritual beliefs about when life begins on anyone.
