When I told y'all that I do not like soup, there was an interesting comment from Issa of Issa's Crazy World wondering whether the love of soup might skip a generation. I thought this was interesting and replied that I would ask my family members. And then I forgot. Luckily, all of my family members read the post and Michelle Belle read the comments, too. She called me a few days after the post went up and told me that no, she doesn't think it skips a generation because she doesn't like soup either. Huh. Who knew?
She says she doesn't hate soup. She'll eat it, but she doesn't love it. Well she's a better woman than I am since I will only eat it when forced. Or when I'm trying to convince people to click the Like button on the BlogHer Facebook page.
Except that's not true either. I will also eat soup for small children and I'll do such a great job of it that my children will swear that I love Stone Soup.
During this phone call with Michelle, she insisted that I love Stone Soup. I laughed uncomfortably and told her that I don't. She insisted again and her voice got shaky and loud, "YOU DO LOVE STONE SOUP!"

It was obviously upsetting to my almost 21-year-old daughter to find out that I only pretended to love Stone Soup. I only pretended to love it so much that we carried three special stones, the size of a 10-year-old's fist, around the world with us so that we could always make their special Stone Soup.
So I did what all good mothers do -- I lied and told her she was right. Sort of. I had obviously just forgotten how much I love Stone Soup because it had been so long since I've had it. We lost our stones at some point in the last 10 years, and of course there's no way we would ever be able to make Stone Soup properly -- without those special stones, lovingly selected by my three oldest children.
So -- if you see Michelle, please do tell her how much I love Stone Soup. Just to be on the safe side you might also tell Jenn or Chris, if you run into them some day, that their mom really loved Stone Soup. We need to keep those childhood memories happy ones, right?
I hope my copy of Stone Soup is in one of the bins of old children's books but since it's -3F out there, I can't actually go and look. If you don't have your own recipe, I would recommend this one from What's Cooking with Kids. It seems very close to ours -- except we used three stones, of course.
Do you make Stone Soup with your kids? With special stones or will any old stones do for your family?
