I Miss Molly Ivins
By constantcommoner on November 07, 2013
It's hard for us liberals to watch Ted Cruz, Texas' answer to Tailgunner Joe McCarthy, without wishing our gal Molly Ivins was here to 'splain the little guy to us. Wouldn't she have loved taking that guy apart? I wouldn't even deign to guess what nicknames he would have to learn to live with once she got through with him. Fun! When Rick Perry hit the scene and became governor of Texas, I wished for the same thing: Come back, Molly!
When Perry first got to thinking the White House might be a good place to hang his hat, I longed for just one more column from Molly. Nobody could take a pol down like she could, and when he froze on the stage on Candidates Night and couldn't name the departments he would immediately eliminate once he took office (“The third agency of government I would do away with - the education, the uh, the commerce and let’s see. I can’t the third one. I can’t. Sorry Oops.”), I swear I could see Molly sit up straight, smile her Cheshire Cat smile, and mosey on over to her keyboard.
But Perry is a goof. he might be the governor of the Great State of Texas, but that's their problem. He's no longer on the main stage and probably never will be again. Ted Cruz is something different. Him I'm going to worry about. Which is why I could use a few laughs right about now.
Hold the phone! I'm watching MSNBC's Martin Bashir right this very moment and, after the clip where Ted Cruz is forced to comment on Chris Christie's colossally spectacular gubernatorial win and mutters something to this effect: "Well, it's good that Christie shoots his mouth off that well", but then adds, inexplicably (word for word), "But Obamacare isn't working," Bashir, I swear, channels Molly Ivins! He just said, and I quote: "That man can take a line and ride it like a rodeo cowboy." I am IMPRESSED. And a little frightened. Was that Molly??
But here's what's happening with this post: I'm about done with it. Know why? Because I have four books of Molly's writings in front of me, plus a terrific biography. My intent, as you might guess, was to grab some quotes and insert them in here. But, as you might guess, I got to reading little chunks of each and...
...I'll have to get back with you.
