BUT, I Still Have 8 Weeks To Go...
By Susan Banner Todd on July 29, 2012
I’m in the process of moving from Virginia Beach to Arnold, Missouri and I find that I have ‘way’ too much time on my hands. I just finished a long term contract job with Chesapeake Regional Medical Specialty Office; even though I am willing to work in the 8 remaining weeks, employment opportunities have waned. Of course, I am the most skilled of all the worker bees and any company would be glad to have my skill set at their disposal BUT there is that 8 week timeline holding me hostage to what I can accept.
So… I have just refinished my nesting tables that I have had for well over 20 years. I did purchase them new but through the many moves (yes, I like moving) and other mishaps as well as goodhaps, they were in dire need of ‘something’. With a certain inner excitement, I stripped those babies down and went to work. I live in an apartment which means that going to work means hauling the ‘little buggers’ in and out of the apartment to the deck and back again. No easy task since the weather here in Virginia Beach has bordered on chaotic with one severe storm warning following another. I am proud to say that after much stripping, even more sanding, and three coats of polyurethane that I have a completed project. They do look lovely but it took less than a week and I still have 8 weeks to go….
Being high energy and highly organizational I have everything packed with the exception of the bare necessities. Ok, I did have to go through the boxes a couple of times but ‘kudos’ because it was only a couple of times. Of course, I do know that in the span of 8 weeks the possibility does exist that I may have to open a box or two. My ‘kudos’ may be a little early. Yesterday, after moving out my china hutch to another home, I reorganized all my packed boxes in a way that would make my son proud. Much accomplished but I still have 8 weeks to go…
Another project has been my herbs. I have them all lined up on the counter, ready to go. I make tinctures, wraps, poultices, syrups, teas, and salves. I just know if I pack those ‘sweet’ jars that I am going to ‘need’ them for one thing or another. So they sit there, in desperate need of packing, cluttering my once attractive kitchen. Ready and waiting but I still have 8 weeks to go…
I know! I can work on my closet. I can check for missing buttons, frays and other tragedies that can play havoc in our closets. There are those pesky hems that need either to be shortened or lengthened. I could face the horror of trying on ‘all’ clothes and doing away with all the ‘when I lose ten pounds’ clothes? NO.. I have a better idea; I’ll pack up the ‘when I lose ten pounds’ variety and haul them to Missouri. I am pretty sure that I’ll lose the eternal ten pounds when I get there but I still have 8 weeks to go…
I’ve been working on my book with such diligence that my simple story has evolved into a three generational epic. Don’t get me wrong, I love writing it and I so enjoy the process which has a way of morphing all on its own. My challenge is that I have started another book. I don’t know why I do these things but a friend once said, “If you keep this up you will never be published.” I thought about that I guess that hasn’t been my motivation. I don’t mean that I don’t want to get published; it’s more about sitting down to write, I become so wrapped in my own characters and story line that the process itself is very rewarding. One never knows what inspiration will roll in during the next 8 weeks. Who knows? I may start a dozen more books? <insert madcap laugh here>But I still have 8 weeks to go… Sigh!
