If PBS Went Away, What Would You Miss? Anything?

BlogHer Original Post

In last night’s presidential debate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney told moderator Jim Lehrer, former PBS NewsHour anchor, "I'm sorry, Jim, I'm going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I'm going to stop other things. I like PBS, I love Big Bird. Actually I like you, too. But I'm not going to -- I'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for [it]."

The quote sparked a Twitter meme and bolstered the aggression that led Romney to win the first debate by most counts.

It also led us to wonder: what would a PBS-free TV landscape look like? This morning, BlogHer’s editors were asking each other which show we would miss most if PBS went entirely away. (Rita: Downton Abbey; Julie: tie, Downton Abbey and America’s Test Kitchen; Denise: Sesame Street; Stacy: Nature).

Your turn:

Do you think cutting government funding to PBS is a good idea? Of course, PBS could step up its private donations and still continue; our poll is speculating more about the shows than the politics. Do you think it would? Tell me in the comments.
