I want my husband to listen to me more.

I want to make more money.

I would like to meet someone special.

Wishful thinking or goals?

While these may be measurable (Did it happen? yes or no), they lack the detail, the direction and timelines that make goals effective and powerful.

When "I want to make more money," is refined into "My goal is to have a new, higher paying job by 7/1/2010." Then detailed action steps are planned and taken: "I have updated my resume, joined 2 online job sites and I will visit 5 companies this week to leave my resume and get information on their hiring processes." The goal (well defined, timed, realistic, measurable) leads to a clearer understanding of the actions to take. Thinking about the goal several times daily and taking consistent action expands your connection to your goal as it becomes more realistic, increasing the probability of success.

Write down and connect with your goal to help you focus on it. Fill in the details to give your energy a more defined target, a place to create.  Design and act on your goal to be effective, much more effective than aiming your time and resources at wishes.
