We gave up XM over the summer. The content never justified its expense, so it lost its place in the family budget. As a result, I had to get chummy with the local FM options and to my surprise; Edmonton's radio stations don't entirely suck.
My favorite station by far is 102.3 aka Now Radio. The on air personalities seldom make my ears bleed and one of their morning guys would be worth an admission price, but luckily he's free.
Yesterday, as daughter and I drove back to the hamlet after escaping the town's ER with minimal exposure to virulent disease, we listened to the station as Adam and Taz (we aren't really on a first name basis) read Tweets and texts listeners sent in responding to the topic of the day.
"If you could only have one for the rest of your life, would you pick music or movies," Adam asked and the responses poured in.
Many respondents noted the relative lack of actual good movies these days.
"A person only needs to have wasted money on a ticket to the new Adam Sandler movie to know that music is the correct answer," someone texted.
But there are always those who couldn't commit and own it.
"I'd pick movies with good soundtracks."
Leave it to today's youth to find the loophole.
Daughter piped confidently from the back seat,
"I'd pick Chipmunks the Squeqel."
"But what if you could have only one, " I said. "Just music or just movies?"
Silence and then a pained tone,
"Why would I have to do that?"
A good point. Why indeed?
I don't know. There are good movies. Not so much in recent years, but I could probably scare up a list of a fifty worth watching, and if I could bend the rule a bit to include television, add a dozen or so more.
But music, sigh. You can soundtrack movies, but movies don't soundtrack life the way music does. You don't dance to movies on your wedding day. You share a song with your love not a movie.
"Their playing our movie," just doesn't roll off the tongue with the same feeling. When Bogie told Sam to play it again, he wasn't talking about a YouTube clip.
So I pick music, what about you?
