If You Only Have 10 Minutes to Exercise... Just Do It!

For the first time in my life, with the start of 2010, I actually made a resolution to make fitness a priority. I realize I'm a little late to the party, but what can I say? I'm a late bloomer. And really, really lazy. Nonetheless, with the support and ridicule of four like-minded friends, I'm now firmly ensconced in a challenge to lose ten pounds in ten weeks. (Shameless plug: If you care to follow our journey, all five of us are blogging it over at Five Full Plates.)

Changing my diet has been the easy part, complaints about how much I miss chocolate and other forbidden foods aside. No, the hard part has been sticking with an exercise regime.

For one thing, I sit at a desk all day (read: am sedentary) and never really found a physical leisure activity that I really enjoyed (read: am lazy). For another thing, I work full time, I have two kids and a dog and a husband and a filthy house and it never feels like I have time for, well, anything. When time is such a precious commodity, it can be really difficult to commit to doing something you don't particularly enjoy in the first place. And the grim reality is that some days I consider it a major accomplishment to manage time for a shower, nevermind squeezing in a full workout.

So what's a modern gal to do? Give up?

Never! Even ten minutes is enough time to give your body a little bit of attention and build up your strength and endurance. I mean, yes, on ideal days I work out for thirty consecutive minutes (at least), but some days I only get ten minutes early in the morning and another ten just before the kids get home from school. I'm slowly but surely learning how to maximize whatever time I have.

Things I do when I have just 10 minutes to work out:
1) Take the dog for a brisk walk around the block.
2) Run up and down the stairs while on a conference call.
3) Do stretches while reading.
4) My new favorite fast-n-dirty fitness secret: The 10 Minute Solution DVD series. Many (all?) of them are available via Netflix's live streaming, which means I currently have my Roku loaded up and ready for me to spend ten minutes sweating and grunting at a moment's notice.

The Pilates and the Kickboxing routines are my favorites -- they're challenging, but I can endure ten minutes. Afterward I generally think, "Huh, I wonder if that really does anything," and my question is answered the next day when I find that muscles I never knew I had are now sore.

I went ahead and bought myself a pair of weighted gloves; hand weights would work just as well, I suppose, but as I'm fairly uncoordinated I didn't want to risk dropping one on myself mid-workout. The gloves add a little extra resistance, and they make me feel like I'm maximizing my time.

Now, even on days when I "don't have any time," I make sure I do at least ten minutes of something, and it seems to keep me on track. And really, who doesn't have ten minutes? You can totally do this.

Need more ideas? No problem.

Fitness Magazine has an entire section of 10-minute workouts.

Go Workout Mom shares two different routines for doing 10 minutes of cardio.

If you'd rather see it, SparkPeople has a YouTube video of a 10 minute jump start cardio workout available.

Oh She Glows has a great guest post from fitness expert Marci Lall that includes a 10 minute Bootcamp workout video specifically designed for women.

And of course you're already part of the 10x Club here at BlogHer, right? You can check out the great 10x Club posts, many of which come from my fitness idol, Crabby McSlacker, who also rocks the advice over at Cranky Fitness.

Bottom line: Ten minutes is enough time to work towards better fitness, and maybe even work towards wanting to spend more than ten minutes at it, too. Pinky swear.

G. stands for GIRL

Excercise / Exercise; Fitness:

Being does come as a result of Doing, as in Physical Well Being; A Great Body; SuperBody.

Obviously... Over the last Twenty (20) Years: Aerobics; The Gym; Pilates; Step; Kick; Ball; Run; Jog; (The Yoga Class?); lots of Tone and Stretch and NOW onwards to include and remember from girlhood days: swim!

... is like brushing your teeth.

There is a Changeroom and sometime Lockers and Showers at The Beach, and some cities do have Outdoor Community Swimming Pools in the Summer, Open to the Public with Lifeguard(s) and Lockers and Changerooms and Showers sometimes. What a sur(prize)! After Twenty (20) Years, You get to show off Your Body in a Bias-Cut Maillot and then in a Bikini!

The Climbing Wall? (no harness/ no ropes / no throwing grips)

RockClimbing. Hiking! Camping; Canoeing... Kayak?

(Kayak/Canoe paddles are bouyant, therefore not heavy). CLUE: The People who carry the tent(s) are picking up a bookbag full of books every day. (see note below)

Going Out(doors) to collect Wildflowers.

Today, it really is not recommended to be doing anything that actually involves any equipment (i.e. bike; balls; rackets; clubs; ropes).
This is obvious, since in one's ordinary day, the heaviest object one would pick up, really is a Wooden Spoon or an Emery Board.

This article touches on so many valid points! With our lives as time constricted and chaotic as they are, a regular workout routine is a very hard thing to come by.

However, with some proper preparation you can manage your time to allowing yourself to get in that workout. I found this link below that is chock full of time management techniques and day to day tricks that allows you those necessary 30 minuets a day. Check it out, it really helped and I felt it necessary to pass it on!

I had a baby in my thirties and have been "wishing" my old body back. Hasn't happened yet - especially with all the fruit snacks lying arond. Those are yummy, but full of carbs.

Leslie Sansone's "Walk Away the Pounds" is also fun - and the moves are easy.

Anyhoo, thanks for the motivation. I've bookmarked Goworkoutmom.

Thanks again!

Great idea Deb...and I like the word "enforce" because  I would have to!  Let me give that a try.  Right now I am overeating on commercials! NG.   As my mom would say "No Good!"

When life and schedules keep me from hitting the gym -or getting much exercise in- I try to enforce my "commercial exercise time."

I always chill at the end of the night with an hour or so watching something on TV.  So I get up and do something for every commercial break.  Pushups, planks, squats, lunges, stretchy band stuff.  It ends up being about 12-15 minutes of moving for a 1 hour show.

My shoulder surgery was as a result of a hit and run and they never caught the guy...pre-accident I was lifting heavy at the gym...bench pressing  125 with a spotter...every morning at the gym...great socail network...buff body...over a year and a half now and no lifting...lots of weight on...at first could barely stand up...luckily my surgeon is a cyclist and he told me to keep cycling so all the muscles would not go lax...so now I am in recovery mode and just barely getting going again...still not back to work from the surgery..but Monday.  Doing PT exercises and doing a little at the gym..light cardio and on the trainer with my bike for short amounts of time just to build the shoulder back up.

The 10 minute idea helped me to get motivated last night to do the PT that I knew would really hurt...but majorly, I have been overeating and killing the literal pain with food.  I need to stop this.  Any advice?

It's so easy to be "all or nothing" about exercise, yet every little bit counts!

For me, it's the shower issue that makes longer sessions more practical for cardio.  But I've discovered that strength training and stretching can be slipped in throughout the day in increments as small as 2 minutes.  I keep some dumbells handy and have learned a lot of bodyweight exercises.  Then when I do go to they gym, the "to do" list isn't nearly as long.

nice article. 10 min is such a short time when working or in front of the computer but sometimes i find it hard to excercise even just for ten minutes. but this year, i do my best to at least do my stretching.

You're absolutely right Mir! Like my doctor said 'any exercise is better than no exercise', ten minutes a day is a good start! I've belonged to a gym for years and go very early in the morning five days a week. It's the best part of my day. Like you, I spend much of my day sitting at my computer.  I do take breaks to walk the dog. Great article, very informative and inspiring!
