"I'm on a Horse." Old Spice's The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.

Arguably the hottest viral video these days is the "Manmercial" The Man Your Man Could Smell Like. In just a couple of weeks it has garnered over 2 million views -- far surpassing any of the other spots on the Old Spice YouTube channel.

When I first saw this commercial I laughed, sheepishly, and did not proclaim my love for it on Twitter as I feared that, once again, I would have to surrender my feminist card. But when I saw media critic Harry Allen call the ad's star, Isaiah Mustafa, "luscious man meat" I could resist no longer.

I've been happy to find out that I am not alone in my love for the self-aware humor and sexy-funny of the star. Nordette Adams noticed, too.

I caught it on DVR as I was fast-forwarding. Of course, this brother's body is what caught my eye as it whizzed by, but I also saw his facial expressions and thought, "Hey, wait! He's got to be saying something funny." So, I rewound and yes, he was saying some pretty funny stuff, "Look at your man, now back to me," and so forth. This commercials plays on one of the oldest gender stereotpyes, macho man masculinity. Go, Village People!

Erin Kotecki Vest, AKA @QueenofSpain twittered and facebooked her love.

In addition to being hilarious, the Old Spice ad succeeds where other commercials for male body washes fail -- not only do men see themselves in the ad, but it speaks directly to women. Win-Win. Take for example Gillette's "Wash like a man, feel like a man" and Dove's Men+Care "The Journey to Comfort." Both try to take on manly-man stereotypes with humor but don't quite get the pitch right and fail to hook viewers (Though, Dove's behind the scenes shower ad with Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees is a bit better).

Part of the reason for the success of the Old Spice ad versus its competitors is because of Isaiah Mustafa's approach. Christie D'Zurilla at the Los Angeles Times' Ministry of Gossip blog interviewed Mustafa and got the scoop on how he came up with his "smell like a man, man" persona:

The Old Spice body wash audition was like any other except ...

... the night before, he called a college buddy, quarterback Jake Plummer, most recently of the NFL's Denver Broncos, to shoot the breeze. Jake wasn't home, but Jake's answering machine was -- so Isaiah, schooled in improvisation, did an over-the-top mini performance of the script he had in hand.

It was over the top in a way that wound up striking the fancy of the public, as it caught the wave of uber ad-awareness that follows Super Bowl Sunday. Playing in theaters while couples hit "Valentine's Day" and "Avatar" last weekend hasn't hurt either.

The other things that make this commercial so funny and compelling are the dialogue ("two tickets to that thing you love") and the seamless single shot take. The story of making the commercial is fascinating. Tech guru Leo Laporte interviewed the creative minds behind the spot who reveal the magic of how it was done.

And, as if it couldn't get any better, comes word that Isaiah Mustafa will be guesting on an upcoming episode of Castle. I guarantee you I will be glued to my set to see the Old Spice Man and Firefly's Nathan Fillion together. I predict that they will have an awesome chemistry not seen since the days of Joey Buchanan and Dorian Lord (3:30 in) from One Life To Live. Hollywood, here's a tip: I will pay money to see these two in a buddy flick.

Do you love the commercial? Hate it? Looking at your man and now back to the Old Spice man?

The commercial is also treating constructed gender stereotypes for both men and women with silliness -- I mean, diamonds! And he's on a boat! And he's on a

Um, no stalk (I just learned that phrase from the WSJ, lol!) but I did see that video because @isaiahmustafa tweeted it. Hope you get a reply, Beth!

Don't know if anyone else has linked to this:  http://youtu.be/sDo46bfxUP4

This couple have set the text of the commercial to the tune of Annie's Song.  It's very weird but kind of awesome.  Not as funny as the commercial itself, of course.

Just sent a message to @isaiahmustafa ( http://twitter.com/isaiahmustafa ).  Waiting for a reply.  :-)

I can't imagine that his rates haven't shot up astronomically. But I do know that he is going to be on The Ellen Show next week (because he tweeted it) :-)

I've heard from him at least twice and I wasn't talking to him but about him using @isaiahmustafa ( http://twitter.com/isaiahmustafa/ ), and I would not have known he was on Twitter, Maria, if it were not for your reply to my tweet about the commercial. :-) He's got a good sense of humor.

I hope his agent has gotten him an Old Spice raise by now. LOL

Tweet a link to his twitter stream http://twitter.com/isaiahmustafa/ or tweet something charming directly to him. He might just surprise you with a reply or a re-tweet. :)

I also don't have a man to look at before looking back to the man our men could smell like (if we had a man) but I doubt Old Spice will mind us watching and laughing, Whitney. ;-)

Thanks so much for your comment.

I'm glad you are able to laugh along with the ad even though it is not a product you would purchase given the ingredients and packaging. And yes, if you have to explain the joke to someone they probably still aren't going to find it funny. And disappointing when we can't share the laughter with our friends.

Thanks so much for your comment and perspective, Beth!

So I'm a black male and my girlfriend LOVES this commercial, so I promised her that I'd memorize it and act it out for her someday.  I googled the script and stumbled on this blog, I had no idea how popular the commercial was, I just thought she was crazy.   LOL.  Just wanted to say thanks for motivating me to actually to pull this off.  I'm sure my reward is going to be fantastic :-)   Oh, and I see that this is a woman only blog, so I wont bother you anymore.  Cheers!

Whitney923 5 pts

Love it!

I currently am without a man, and if I had one, I don't know that I would buy Old Spice, but I do like the commercial.

Beth Terry 5 pts

I added that line to my email signature last week after watching the ad over and over and over again and then the "making of" video.  I too wondered if it was okay to like, but for different reasons.  As a green blogger environmentalist, I don't think I am supposed to like commercials for a product whose ingredients are mostly things I can't pronounce:

WATER, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, SODIUM SULFATE, COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE, FRAGRANCE, SODIUM LAUROAMPHOACETATE, CITRIC ACID, SODIUM BENZOATE, POLYQUATERNIUM-10, DISODIUM EDTA, METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE, METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE, COLORANTS

And yet I tweeted it and facebooked it and emailed it to all my female friends.  It's definitely the funniest commercial I've ever seen and I can't get enough of it.  I'm driving my husband crazy quoting lines.

On the other hand, one of my female Facebook friends commented:

I never got the point of this stupid ad - was it supposed to be serious?? I didn't think it was funny - revolting was more like it.

I guess we all just have a different sense of humor.  Can you really explain to someone why something is funny? Should you try?

I was reading your older blog on pro-choice and was looking to reply and did not see the link. I'm new here so I dont know if I am missing something. I was so impressed with your pro-choice posting and if I wanted to write about abortion, I could not have done a better job. I am pro-choice and this really hit home in a very good way..the one that gives you a little chill and makes you know, "she understands" I dont think I could write with so much depth and class although I have the feelings you do. ..and thank You for posting the "I'm on a Horse" commercial. Whether you like Old Spice or not, it is funny! ;-)

Maria Niles 5 pts

You make great points, Heidi Marie. No matter how clever the advertising it is not going to make us buy something we don't want or need. I think what could happen for Old Spice is that either people who've forgotten to buy it might pick some up, those who use the after shave might be introduced to the body wash or younger consumers might be introduced to Old Spice for the first time through the catchy ad.

And, yes, L'Occitane has some incredible scents. Love their stuff.

It tickles me that men and ladies both get a kick out of the commercial. And love that when you look at your man, he not only smells like the old spice man but that you see your hunk :) As it should be.

Well, I did look at him, then my husband, then him then my husband and got a laugh out of it as well. ..Because he reminded me of the guys I ran into in my 20s who thought they were "it." My friends and I would giggle seeing him as the joke of the day. My husband is HOT! And no beer belly at 47. ;-) I don't like the smell of Old Spice either. The most amazing body wash/shower gel-fragrance, to me is L'Occitane's "Bavx." YUM! It has a quality scent that is earthy, masculine and light with just a drop of sweetness. If he uses common soaps, he'll stick to Dial or Irish spring and even that beats Old Spice for me.

Dory 5 pts

My husband actually pointed this one out to me!

Old Spice hit this one right out of the park. Genius!

I put this commercial up on my blog a few days ago, along with the comment that not only is my husband AND both my boys repeating the lines, my husband actually texted me some of the lines just to make me laugh.

And, yes, my hunk uses Old Spice body wash and has for years. Too bad they quit making that Glacial Falls scent. Swagger smells almost as good.

I'm on a horse.

I don't think I've ever loved a commercial as much as I love this one. My favorite part is when he says, "Anything is possible when your man smells like Old Spice and not a lady; I'm on a horse."

Maria, as I told you before, thank you (and Average Jane ( http://averagejane.blogs.com/ )) for pointing that "making of" video out to me. I loved that almost as much as I love the commercial. Thank you for the link to my blog also. And that interview with him at Ministry of Gossip was great.

I hope the young male writers who put this together get some kind of award. & Isaiah is not just easy on the eyes, he's a talented actor. WOW! What else are former NFL players are hiding beneath all that brawn?

:-)

PS: OMG! I had forgotten Nathan used to play Joey Buchannan. I my other life I was a OLTL addict.

I've seen some take umbrage at the message of suggesting men shouldn't smell like ladies. And I even had a momentary twinge of "ooh, am I allowed to like this?" confusion. But I agree I hope we can all find the humor because this is one too good not to laugh at. Corpses, too!

If a person can't see what makes this comic genius, I feel sorry for them.  I have to say I love everything about this commercial (and okay, that includes the fact that he is, most certainly, incredibly attractive).  It's well written, well-acted, well-shot, and just plain funny.  The day I don't think stuff like this is funny, I hope it's because I'm already dead.

(Though, frankly, I think even my corpse would have laughed at the line about the tickets.)

But not because Isaiah Mustafa is smokin' (although he IS). I like it because it so deftly skewers its own genre. It openly mocks the imagery that has been used for DECADES to try and convince women to buy personal hygeine products for men (who it seems, according to marketers, can never be fully trusted to buy soap for themselves).

This commercial says to me, hey there, smart lady! We KNOW you aren't actually capable of being brainwashed into buying soap just by being shown pictures of muscular men captaining yachts, riding horses and proffering diamonds. We KNOW that you are well aware that your husband with a slight beer belly will not actually be transformed into a buff former NFL star when he washes himself with our product. Therefore, we will not insult your intelligence, but instead will try to entertain you with slick visual tricks and humor. (Plus a really hot guy whose most attractive trait is that, under all that perfectly played ironic bombast, he actually seems intelligent enough to have a conversation with.)

It makes me feel like the ad writers have been watching Sarah Haskins.

It makes me laugh. Every time. Also with the line "two tickets to that thing you love," I sometimes snort my coffee. Of course, my husband finds it hilarious beucase he's been using the Old Spicy body wash(es) for years. He now thinks he's ahead of the curve and super awesome.
