Okay we all need to go shopping and there has to be SOME
rules, right? I am sure that some of you are saying “so then what do you
suggest Smarty-Pants?”
First of all, I resent your tone but I’ll presume that it’s
only out of frustration and not a deliberate attack on my person. I’m guessing
you guys want to know where I suggest you find all the crap I keep yammering on
about. Well I will certainly try to help and this is by no means a
comprehensive or “must shop” list this is just where I actually find stuff or
know good stuff is to be found.
Before I get into this I have to say that the internet is
your friend. You comparison shop for everything else in your life clothes
should be no different if you have the time. The truth is that if you are
trying to build a wardrobe you need well-made pieces that will last at least 5
years and that means you will need to drop some coin. However, if you do not
have the time don’t worry just try to hit stores early on sale days to find a
good deal.
Okay, so what do I love? I really love the internet. I do
almost all of my shopping online which only really works because I know my
measurements and I’m okay with buying clothes in a size larger then I normally
wear to get something that fits. The problem people have with the internet and
why they are scared of it is because they don’t know if the clothes will fit
which is why you need to know your measurements. Just because you wear a 10 at
Macy’s doesn’t necessarily mean on a certain website you will be that same 10
you might be a 4 or a 24. This is why websites give you a size chart and if
they say something runs small they really do mean order a size or two up. So I
guess my best internet tips are:
1)
Know your measurements, if you can’t or don’t
want to take them then stick to retailers or brands you are already familiar
with and know how they fit
2)
Always check size charts, always!
3)
If you are not familiar with a retailer Google
them if someone has something bad to say about them you will find it pretty
quick
4)
Check return policies. Even if you know your
measurements and all that good stuff something could still not be right for you
and you’ll want to know how fast you have to return.
5)
Check mall stores websites sometimes there are
HUGE markdowns and sales that are website only. Also if you frequent a specific
shop sign up for their email list on their website you will get “secret”
discount coupons or special offers which are always cool
Okay so what about offline? I love discount shopping. I
really, really do. I feel like it’s a hunt for the perfect item at an
incredible price. Not everyone digs it and you really do have to be in the mood
for it. But here are my tips for stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx:
1)
Don’t be afraid to be pushy. I will slide that
rack down so fast to allow me to flip through the clothes I do not care what
the lady next to me is doing, not my problem.
2)
Know what’s a deal and what is not a deal. Do
not trust the tags that say “item retails for” because who knows, right? So
this is where you either just have to be psyched to get something cute for
$9.99 or really be hunting for some great designer stuff.
