Introduction to BlogHer- Healthy Hair Aficionados Unite!
By Our-Tiaras on November 08, 2012
If you're reading this, thanks for sharing your time with me. I'm Lei, and I'm passionate about healthy hair. I titled my Blog "Our Tiaras" because I want to revisit a movement that many have been vocal about and visible with: loving our hair. I am an African-American woman, but this blog is designed to transcend that. Healthy hair is something that any woman can appreciate, regardless of the social construct that we call race. I am passionate about the promotion of healthy hair maintenance and techniques, and very open to new ideas, thoughts, and suggestions about the topic.
I came up with the name "Our Tiaras" after a discussion with my boyfriend about my dedication to my hair. I was telling him that I keep a journal that details my healthy hair journey goals, setbacks, accomplishments, and more. He suggested that I share it with others, perhaps in the form of a blog. The conversation continued with more ways to get my voice out about healthy hair and I began to brainstorm the different ways in which we adorn our heads. Why is hair so important to us? Why do we jump though various hoops and invest so much time and money into our hair? What does our hair really mean to us, and are the hair lessons we learned from our mother, sisters, and aunts the same ones that we will pass onto our daughters and sons? Then it hit me- Our hair is like a tiara that sits atop of our heads. Sometimes they gleam, and sometimes they are dull. The more you know about your tiara, the more you understand how to give it what it needs to illuminate a room- or even just your vanity mirror.
Hair brings one's self-image into focus; it is vanity's proving ground. Hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices. ~Shana Alexander
This blog is not designed to incite negativity or push any agendas other than exploring the beauty that is healthy hair. It is a forum that encourages honest opinions in a respectful manner. Healthy hair is very often reflective of the lifestyles we lead. All of us come to different understandings about our hair in a variety of ways. Sometimes it's through experience, other times it's through passed down generational knowledge of hair. I want us to share stories, pictures, and advice about our hair. I want to to share the do's and don'ts we've learned about our hair. Basically, I want us to share.
We each wear a tiara- they are all individual and unique. I want us to value them, treasure them, and put them on display. So don't be afraid to show off your tiara!!
Yours Truly in this Journey,
"I belong to no race nor time. I am the eternal feminine with its string of beads."
-Zora Neale Hurston
