Just when you thought some governments couldn’t get any more barbaric toward women. Here comes news that a celebrated Iranian actress has been sentenced to 90 lashes and a year in jail for the crime of appearing in a film the religious authorities don’t like.
Seems a little extreme, doesn’t it?
Not surprisingly, the case of Marziah Vafamehr has drawn outrage from women’s groups to filmmakers. One of those is Women and Hollywood, where you can see the trailer for My Tehran for Sale, the film starring Vafamehr that conservatives found worthy of a crime.
Why is this kind of sick punishment still tolerated? If it were up to me, lashing--and stoning, for that matter--could be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
In the meantime, I wonder how Vafamehr is doing while she awaits her fate. If you could write a letter to her, what would you say?
