Just when you thought some governments couldn’t get any more barbaric toward women. Here comes news that a celebrated Iranian actress has been sentenced to 90 lashes and a year in jail for the crime of appearing in a film the religious authorities don’t like.

Seems a little extreme, doesn’t it?

Not surprisingly, the case of Marziah Vafamehr has drawn outrage from women’s groups to filmmakers. One of those is Women and Hollywood, where you can see the trailer for My Tehran for Sale, the film starring Vafamehr that conservatives found worthy of a crime.

Why is this kind of sick punishment still tolerated? If it were up to me, lashing--and stoning, for that matter--could be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

In the meantime, I wonder how Vafamehr is doing while she awaits her fate. If you could write a letter to her, what would you say?

I would tell her that I am fiercely praying on her behalf. And that I am so sorry that she has to go through this thoughtless and needless humiliation.

My heart shrinks at the thought of what she will be facing soon. But it hurts worse to know that we are helpless to do anything about it.

This is truly barbaric. It serves as a cautionary note that once great civilizations can fall into barbarism and that we must be ever aware that Fundamentalism, in any form, is dangerous, that inequality and different treatment are warning signs of disintegration of a culture.

Words cannot express what I feel in a letter - it sickens me in this day and age in our globalized community that we cannot prevent these things from happening to women. How do we make change within other nations which oppress women? If they refuse to hear the voices of other nations?
