Is It More Important to Be Thin or To Be Healthy and Fit?

What do you think? I think that we have lost our way. Most women
would rather be thin and fit into their skinny jeans while filling up
on junk food or fake food (e.g. artificial sweeteners with no
calories), than to make the extra effort to eat less processed, natural
foods and to get some daily exercise.

Bottom line, we Americans want our cake, and we want to eat it too.
We want things to be easy, and why not, it’s easier than having to
change. But what if you want a brownie? What if you could eat and enjoy
it, and not want anymore? What if you crave one but don’t really want
to eat it? Can you handle it?

I just read a terrific article in O Magazine last week by Martha
Beck, author and self-proclaimed yo-yo dieter who has it under control
and is happy about her weight and the fact that she doesn’t diet! I
read the article last week and when I went to Starbuck’s for a cup of
coffee recently, I admit that I was tempted by one of the delicious
looking apple fritters, chocolate chip cookies, or muffins. And then I
remembered Martha Beck’s article, and practiced her thought process and
when it came time to order my coffee, I was no longer tempted by the
sweets as I had let them go and put them out of my mind.

If you’re curious as to her process, here’s a link to her article as
I won’t be able to do it justice.  It’s worth reading if you tend to
think about food, or even are just trying to watch your weight:

Megansul,

I'm new to BlogHer and was wondering how you came across my post? I'm still trying to understand how this all works and how people find blogs they're interested in when there are so many of them! Thanks for letting me know.

I totally hear you on wanting to reach what I think is the perfect number on the scale. But I have recently learned that I can be at the perfect number on the scale and it's still not right! What matters more to me is the fit and feel of me. If I fit comfortably into my clothes and I feel good, I don't even think to weigh myself because the number doesn't really matter. Try it sometime, try on those skinny jeans and if they fit the way you want them to and you feel great, what difference does it matter if the scale says 110 or 150?

Good luck, and let me know if it works.

I love the concept of this but it just feels better to be at the "perfect" number on the scale.  We're all so driven by goals and accomplishments that if that number isn't what we want it to be we feel like we've failed.  Looking forward to reading the article and getting a healthier perspective.
