Is It Time to Take the Risk and Ditch Your Boss?

The Entrepreneurial Working Mom LogoDo you want to spend your life working a job you don’t like? Or are you willing to take that risk to go for your dreams and create the life you truly want for you and your family.

How do you feel when you think about taking risk?

Are you someone that is ready to strap on the harness and bungee jump from the bridge.

Or are you like most people where the idea causes you to break out in a cold clammy sweat. You want to head back to the safety and comfort of the bridge.

If you are in the latter group, averse to risk, you are not alone. Most of us are taught to avoid risk from a very early age.

It feels more comfortable to play it safe.

The problem with playing it safe all the time is that we hold back from living our biggest life. We often find ourselves feeling stuck in situations we feel unfulfilled and unhappy in. We feel too scared to take the risk needed to change it.

When it comes to the decision of leaving your job to leap into your own business the perceived risk can keep your dream just that. A dream. If you add the responsibility of raising kids into the equation the stakes feel even higher.

The reality is that if you want to get rid or your boss and become a successful entrepreneur you have to be willing to take risk. Tolerance for risk is one of the big ingredients of an entrepreneurial mindset.

What if you are one of those people who heads back to the safety and comfort of the bridge when risk comes knocking on your door?

Does that mean your destined to sit behind the desk at a job you don’t like. Left wishing you didn’t have to suffer another day with your boss or that you had more flexibility to spend the time you want with your kids.

No it doesn’t.

What it does mean is that you need to do work to build your risk muscle. Get more comfortable with risk. Increase your tolerance for risk.

When you build these muscles you build courage.

With courage you will take back control of your life. When you do this it is the moment you grasp hold of your dreams and start to live your greatest life.

So how can you start to pump those risk weights? The ones that will build some good solid risk muscles so you can ditch the job and take that leap into a business and life you love.

Here are 3 tips:

Tip #1Use Yourself as an Example.

The best way to start building your risk muscle and your courage is to use you as an example.

We have all done things that were frightening at first and taken risks. Made a speech, started a new relationship, began a new career. One of the biggest is deciding to have kids. We have all overcome challenges and fears in our lives.

Pick a time in your life when you took a risk when you felt scared or like giving up. A time you faced your fears and overcame them to achieve what it was you really wanted.

What was it about you that enabled you to take the risk and keep moving forward?

How can you use these same strengths to now overcome the fears that are holding you back from taking the risk of leaving your job and leaping into your entrepreneurial dream?

Tip #2 Step Closer to the Edge.

To overcome your fears and increase your risk tolerance you need to start stepping yourself closer and closer to the edge. Learn to push yourself out of your comfort zone as you prepare yourself to take the leap.

Choose a fear you have about leaving your job and starting your own business. Think about on action you can take this week to step outside of your comfort zone and move yourself closer to the edge. It can be a small step.

As you do this remind yourself that fears and doubts are a normal reaction.

Acknowledge these feelings and then do it anyway. As you practice this you will naturally find yourself becoming more confident and courageous in taking action towards your dreams.

Tip #3 Build Your Accessory Risk Muscles.

When we breathe we usually only use our diaphragm muscle. Sometimes however we might need extra help getting air into our lungs. For example when we do heavy exercise our body calls on the accessory muscles, our chest muscles and shoulder muscles for help. They come in to support us during this time of stress and to help keep us going.

To build our risk muscle and the ability to face our fears and keep going we need to build a strong support network, our risk accessory muscles.

That extra support we need at times we might feel like giving up.

When we need that extra bit of inspiration and motivation.

Having a strong support network will help you to reach your goals quicker and you will experience more fulfillment and fun in the process.

Here are 5 ways to build your accessory muscles:

  •   Surround yourself with positive, happy people. People that make you feel inspired and believe in you.  Stay away from those who are negative and zap your energy.
  •    Spend Time With Like Minded People. Find ways to spend time with other working moms who left their jobs to start their own business.  There is nothing more inspiring then spending time with people as excited as you about something.
  •   Keep Learning. A great way to stay inspired and meet people to build your support network is to sign up for workshops or seminars that interest you. They are essentially a gathering of like- minded individuals who have common interests and goals to you.
  •   Get Online. Connect online through social media with people that are doing what you want to do.  Stay inspired by the tips, stories and strategies they share on how they got to where they did.
  •   The Golden Rule. You will get as much out of your support network as you put into it. So find the time to stay in touch and help them out. Build mutually beneficial relationships.

Once you start to remember how strong you can be, push your comfort zone and build your risk muscles you will find yourself looking fear squarely in the eye and saying I am going to do it anyway! You will find yourself well on the way to unleashing the confidence and courage to give your boss the boot and leap into your own entrepreneurial journey.

We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face... we must do that which we think we cannot. Eleanor Roosevelt
