It's (Almost) a New Year. Out With The Old Products and In With The New: What Are You Buying?

It all started about a month ago when my friend Holly mentioned that she purchased a Clarisonic Mia facial brush of magic. And then a renewed lust for beauty products spiraled from there and now there are lists upon lists of potions and lotions that I'd like to try.

It always happens at this time of year, not in the Spring which is the traditional time of renewal but during the holidays when I really want to sparkle and dazzle my way through New Years and beyond. I think that this year will be different and that I'll try a new and better regimen or perhaps this eye shadow will really make my eyes pop. I'm both thankful and terrified of the Eyes Lips Face (E.L.F.) brand. You know the one where everything costs a dollar? Well I'm in love with that stuff.

There's something about this time of year that makes me want to peruse Sephora and Beauty.com to check out what's new. And thankfully I have a gig that allows me to buy and try out beauty products and then write about them. I swear that chorus of Angels sings to me every time I get the opportunity. Deep down - and no sense in denying it now - I'm just a big, huge girly girl. One that likes to play with lip gloss and do about fifteen variations of her makeup in the mirror prior to the big event. 'Big event' meaning 'work' or a flight to DC.

Quick story: Growing up - actually I still do this - I would study every step of my mother's makeup process. That is how I learned to mix my foundation with moisturizer. She never had loads of makeup but just some staples and then things to brighten up or emphasize an area when the time called for it. So I learned from her. There is no denying that she is gorgeous (I say this not because I'm her daughter but because there is currently a photo of her ON A BILLBOARD on a major thoroughfare in Albany. My mother is a freaking model) but she also taught me how to focus on things I love and how to hide the things that I don't like. There isn't some arsenal of beauty products in my medicine cabinet but instead a variety of eye shadows and lip glosses.

Come the holidays and during my week off, I clean out the products, re-evaluate and start off the year with things that work. Yes, I do think that every woman should go through her makeup and beauty products throw out the old and in with the new. Get rid of that mascara you hate and simplify to go-to things you love and maybe a little something on the side.

I asked people on Twitter what ONE beauty product they would purchase right now. I like to call this RESEARCH. I loved the results:

@momslant I need a new tube of Kiss Me mascara - first thing that comes to mind.

@looneytunes Clinique Concentrated Turn Around. I am out and my face is tight and weeping.

@sarahbellum Something that would keep my makeup from disappearing after an hour. Or Benefit High Beam.

@Magdeline28 a *really* good eye shadow or blush brush (or the brush cleaner that I am currently out of and need...)

@iammommymae some grace lotion by philosophy

@jezer Any product from Sephora? Eye cream. Eye cream that doesn't sting.

@lmayes It's a Sephora tie between Fresh Sugar Lip Balm & Philosophy Candy Cane soap

@CorksandCaftans one item? the Kinerase Winter Skin Brightener kit. 'tis the season to make good on summer's damage.

Now dish; it's almost the New Year. What beauty product are you getting rid of? What are you buying new? And don't you worry, I'll be sure to share my new loves and loathes soon enough.

Oh I LOVE this topic - we all need a little somethin' new every once in a while, right? On our weekly "Because We Said So" podcast we ran down some of our favorite new purchases and Xmas gifts to ourselves, whether it is a cookbook or a new perfume: My favorite: A red Peugeot Pepper Grinder!
