Its migraine time

Its unavoidable, believe me I've tried just about everything well I'm sure there are many things I haven't tried as when I don't have I don't want to think about them, and when I do have a migraine I'm reluctant to try anything new incase it interferes with the few things I do know (my mother gave me a book on migraine remedies for xmas and I'm afraid I haven't cracked it yet, though I think it may be time).  I started getting full blown migraines when I was 20 and for a long time I couldn't find a correlation but I didn't have the best eating habits at the time so if I went a day without eating anything of substance (gummy bears and sour keys are not food I have discovered;-) I would get a headache, and when I got a headache it would inevitably turn into a migraine.  As my eating and living habits have improved I realize that i get a migraine right around every woman's 'favorite' time of the month and it lasts about 4 days.  I now suck on peppermints constantly and drink tea like its going out of style as I know both of things provide some temporary relief (not to mention lots and lots of water as well), for the first couple of days at least, also I take 2 tylenol extra strength migraine pills every 4 hours.  On the 3rd day there is no relief it is always the worst day and if its really bad I'll feel nauseous or even vomit and I can't be in a room which is more than dimly lit, I have had prescription medication that allows me to function normally (although I do feel woozy) but its expensive and I don't feel comfortable taking this drug which apparently expands the blood cells in my brain on a regular basis.  I think I will end my rant for today with that and continue tomorrow as thinking about this is making my head feel worse.

That's too bad that you and your son both get them, but there is supposed to be a heredity factor.  Mine are from a concussion I received in a motorcycle accident - They are called Post Concussive Migraines.  Much like a regular migraine but more severe and more frequent.  And harder to treat. Hence the 5-7 per week.  I just got over one that lasted almost 3 weeks straight.  A special drug that knocked me out for 3 days finally stopped it - (at least for the following 4 days.) Ice Pick - Red Hot Poker more of the same descriptive phrases are a regular part of my vocabulary.

There are some natural remedies I have tried - suggested by my Neurologist - Headache Specialist - They didn't work for me, but might for you or your son.  Magnesium - my dosage was 200 mg per day. You have to build up to that cause of the laxative effect magnesium could have.  CoQ 10 I forget the dosage but I  am sure you could find it on internet or ask a good headache Dr.  Feverfew - don't take if you have seasonal allergies.  Those are a few.

Hope maybe those things work - when you get one.  They are taken regular as a preventative, if you are interested in trying them.

Take Care.

I understand your pain.

Me and my eldest son (10) get them, only a few times a year but thats enough. My boy gets whole body arua and tells me his legs and arms feel BIIIG (the sight of him running around the room ina panic was too funny to be worrying, poor love!) then headache and sometimes vomiting.

He has light sensitive triggers.

I have food triggers but luckily they are mostly asthma triggers as well so I avoid them when I can! Too many oranges will floor me but most of the time its either stress or , like you, time of the month. I also had a barnstormer of almost a week when I was pregnant.

I tend to get ice pick headaches which is almost more annoying than the "lie in a dark room" ones as you can get on with things but every so often it feels..wait for it..like an ice pick in the brain, it can floor me and will make me cry out, not great in the supermarket :P

Herbal teas help sometimes, nothing caffinated.

But everyone is diffrent :)

Is it your flab or your brain you need to fight? Answers on a postcard please.

I have 5-7 migraines a week or one that last 5 to 7 days.  I can definately sympathize with you.  Too much over the counter medication will actually cause rebound headaches so I can't even take Tylenol, advil or Excedrin etc. I do take the script meds that alter the blood vessels but only allowed 2 a week.  Gingerale watered down helps me with the nausea.  Good Luck and I hope you are feeling better.
