It's Never to Late to Get in the Game

Today I had the distinct pleasure of playing doubles tennis with Mrs. K. While she could be my grandmother – or at least my grandmother’s younger friend – she was a steady opponent. Over the last several months, I’ve seen her out on the courts, almost as consistent as the ball machine that was feeding her shots to hit. During a changeover, I asked her how long she’s been playing tennis. She relayed that it was around her 30th birthday and wished she had started earlier. Then she shared her motivation, “it was better than doing housework!” Of course, we all laughed, as who could argue with that, right?
In the context of the Women’s Sports Foundation’s celebration of Title IX’s 40th Anniversary, I started to think, how great is that? Now, Mrs. K .was probably playing tennis before Title IX was enacted, but she was a trailblazer in her own right. Whatever it takes to get you motivated to play, do it! Whether it’s a friend, a husband, health goals or setting an example to get your kids to get off the couch – it’s never too late or too insignificant. We all have that inner athlete lurking within each of us. I applaud Mrs. K. for sharing her story. (And by the way our doubles team did not win!) It’s a small inspiration (and excuse) to put down the laundry, pick up a racquet – or sport of your choosing – and Get Your Game On, Girls!
