We may not know which two football teams are playing Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis but we now know who will be rocking the stage during the halftime show.

Confirming a not-so-well-kept secret, the NFL and NBC announced during tonight’s Detroit Lions-New Orleans Saints game that Grammy Award-winning singer Madonna will indeed be the featured halftime performer.

The Material Girl will collaborate with Cirque Du Soleil and Jamie King for the gig. Not so coincidentally, her new film W.E.. which she directed, co-wrote and produced, will open nationally on February 3, two days prior to Super Bowl XLVI . The romantic drama, which has received mixed reviews at best, is based on King Edward VIII's abdication of the British throne for American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Madge is also recording an album that’s slated to be released in 2012.

While most tune in to the Super Bowl for the football, there  are many who are in it for the commercials and the halftime show. In fact, the Super Bowl halftime show is the most-watched musical event of the year, with more than 162 million in the U.S. watching The Black Eyed Peas' performance with Slash and Usher in Dallas last February.

A world class entertainer, singer and songwriter, 53-year-old Madonna is a cultural icon who has sold more than 300 million records in the course of her three decade career.  She is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee whose last tour was the most successful tour by a solo artist in history. But is she relevant for this venue?

Now that the entertainment is set, the focus switches back to who will play the big game. Green Bay's Super Bowl win over Pittsburgh last February was a great contest and while a rematch would be a big draw, there are a handful of other teams who have a legit shot including the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens and 49ers who were the first to clinch a playoff spot.

Do you think Madonna was a good choice for the NFL? Any guesses on which teams will take the field in February? Who are your picks both on and off the field?

I saw this announced just a few hours before your post went up. My gut reaction the first time: "Oh...why?" Then I saw the BlogHer piece get posted and I had a "Oh...why?" redux. Exactly the same feeling twice in a row. So, I'm pretty sure I am not all "up in this thang." Too bad - there are so many talented choices. Madonna must have an agent with amazing negotiation skills.

I guess I won't be watching the half-time show this year.

Are any of the people who perform at the Super Bowl overtly relevant when they perform? Janet Jackson hadn't been on any radio or radar for years before her "exposing" performance. How many of the tweens, teens and twenty-somethings even knew the songs the Rolling Stones performed? I'd place money on the younger generations knowing more Madonna songs than Janet Jackson and the Rolling Stones combined.

I'm not defending the choice as I'm not a rabid Madonna fan (though I don't dislike her either), but the relevancy question just seems silly. Whatever the case, hopefully it sounds better than last year's ear-banger. I was so disappointed that the Black Eyed Peas proved to be another band who doesn't live up to their sound when performing live. We all know Madonna delivers, so at the very least, it will be a sound performance.

Ugh. Foodball just got more annoying.

Is she still relevant? She's Madonna. She can make herself relevant when she wants to. ;)
