Janet Evanovich’s "Stephanie Plum’s” PB & Pickles & Chips Sandwich

A peanut-butter sandwich recipe—and layered with bread-and-butter pickles and potato chips—right out of Janet Evanovich’s “Hard Eight” novel, a Stephanie Plum [Bounty Hunter] series. Maybe it’s because I am Menopausal that this sounded so good when I first read it, and not because you’d think I had the “munchies.” I have not been smoking those funny cigarettes. I am a cook, after all, who loves to create, and I am always willing to try something new, even the bizarre.

one for the money stephanie plum janet evanovitchThis is a sandwich that offers sweet, salty and tart, with the addition of peanut butter and potato chip crunch, and really, what doesn’t go with peanut butter? Peanut butter is versatile and wholly satisfying!

“I made us peanut butter and bread-and-butter pickle sandwiches. And because I had company, I added a layer of potato chips.” [Stephanie Plum, out of page 122]

A weird sounding combination, I’ll give you that, but it really is very good! And certainly it may be the kind of sandwich that only a kid would eat, but this is Stephanie Plum we’re talking about. A food junkie with a diet of beer and pizza, large fries and Coke to calm a hangover, and eats donuts till she busts her zip. She is even willing to put her life in danger to satisfy her chocolate and candy cravings. She’ll risk going to the store at all hours of the night, knowing the bad guys may be out there just waiting for their opportunity to strike.

I love to read. And though I read from a variety of genres, reading Ms. Evanovich’s novels, the Stephanie Plum collection, has become an addiction. I can’t put them down. Her books are funny, mingled with mystery and suspense. And there is romance built within a triangle, so every page is filled with non-stop action.

So funny, but I had a pbj and potato chips before I read your post! Next time I'll try the pickles, just so I can say I did!

isthisthemiddle Melanie, you are too funny! That is why I look forward to reading your menopausal blogs. You make me laugh!

So, if you try putting together Stephanie Plum's sandwich, add the cheddar cheese "jbhobs" suggests below. I plan to try it with the added cheese, too, but I am also going to grill it on my cast iron. Yummy! I am just not sure that a glass of milk will go with the pickles here. Yuk!!

HomeRearedChef I haven't found anything I didn't like cheese on or with! Grilling in the cast iron is the way to go, too.

Oh-- I must try some of the Plum series. I like mystery, especially with characters who like salty foods! Fictional characters who don't eat make me angry, by the way. Can't trust them.

isthisthemiddle The Stephanie Plum series are so very funny. Usually, when I am reading my book, my hubby is fast asleep, and I have a hard time keeping from laughing out loud. Sometimes, I am tearing from laughing so hard, as I suppress my laughter. Give them a try, each book only gets funnier!

All I can say that all of you are much, MUCH braver than I am.

sassymonkey Trying anything odd the first time does take bravery. I will not argue with you there. I remember, the first time I built enough courage to eat sashimi, I had to have a few shots of sake first (also my first time). That opened my appetite and taste-buds.

Pickles and peanut butter? Does not appeal to me. Fried pickles, however... that's a book idea I can get behind (tried them after I read What Happened To Goodbye, by Sara Dessen.

HomeRearedChef 46 pts

ewillse I have not yet tried fried pickles, but that does sound so good. I am salivating as we speak/read. LOL!

It's a totally awesome combination, I would just add one thing...a few hunks of cheddar cheese. The real stuff, not that processed junk. Amazing. :)

HomeRearedChef 46 pts

jbhops Wow! Actually, adding the cheese sounds wonderlicious! Let's do one more thing here, then. Since you've suggested adding cheese, lets put it on the skillet and have a grilled cheese sandwich. Now that sounds very yummy!

Totally having that for lunch! I should pay more attention when reading or would have tried it years ago. Thanks for the reminder.

Jane Miller And so totally delicious too! Be careful, though, you might feel like a kid again and act upon mischief. (Smile!)

How did you know I love Stephanie Plum? I'm obsessed! But I never went as far as trying a peanut butter chip pickle sandwich...I'm taking your advice and testing it out!

victorias_view We even got my husband to read Stephanie Plum, and he, too, is hooked. But don't tell anybody. LOL!

Well, I am a big fan of bread-and-butter pickles, and I absolutely love peanut butter, with almost anything, so I had to try this out. Lo-and-behold, I liked it! It made me feel like a kid again.

My grandmother used to love to crush plain-old potato chips over chocolate cake. And that is really good too. Perhaps you've heard that old expression, "I'll try anything once, and twice if I like it"? Well, maybe I wouldn't try everything...just within reason. (Smile!)

HomeRearedChef Chuckles! It's an excellent idea! I never thought of chips on cake! yum!
