Welcome to the New Year!
January is a call to be fully awake, as all seasons can serve to nourish souls. And as we turn the page to this frosty month, our inner fires burn brightly, full of hope and promise.
Although the new year begins in winter’s silence, its song will swell through the hours and days and weeks we mark in our lives ahead, beginning with this first month.
Arriving full force in the bleak midwinter of our desires, January hits us immediately with a paradox. It faces two ways: backward toward the year completed, laid down in annals for all time … yet also stirringly forward, as we boldly contemplate the unexplored, the unrealized. Possibility gathers here, like fruit ready to be plucked.
January rolls out its cold, fresh days before us, like a path of stepping-stones to seasons and hours that lie deep in the heart of the nascent year. It speaks to us of gateways, doors, new beginnings, as-yet-untraveled paths of experience and awareness.
We will let the days themselves teach us, as we bring our souls along. January’s stark landscapes and brilliant morning suns remind us that important growth is taking place, deep beneath surfaces encrusted with frost or snow, hardened and impenetrable from without—yet bursting with life within.
January is an inaugural month, open and inviting, and the days ahead are ours to name. Let us choose to take each one as gift, carrying wisdom forward in our being, whatever the unfolding of this new year may bring!
