Jennifer Weiner explores life behind the walls of Super Woman, from alcohol to drug addiction
By Joanne Eglash on June 30, 2014
I first came across Jennifer Weiner's writing in "Good in Bed." It was the first time that I had read a book with a heroine who was (wait for it) large. A woman who knew how it felt to go from "pleasingly plump" to unpleasingly chubby to tug-at-your-waistband, dread-trying-on-swimsuits large.
From there, I read her books more voraciously than dark chocolate with almonds (well, to be honest, I read her books while eating dark chocolate with almonds). From "The Next Best Thing: A Novel" to "Then Came You: A Novel" to "Little Earthquakes: A Novel," Jennifer uses her pen like a paintbrush, crafting the kind of characters who you could imagine in your own life.
Now Jennifer's authored a new book, and it's her most compelling and captivating: "All Fall Down: A Novel." The book takes us into the life of a woman who seems to have it all. But this "Super Woman" who controls her career, her parents, her husband and her children can't control her increasing addiction to prescription medication.
It's a wake-up call for every person who says "Well, but it's prescription medication" as well as a look at the dark side of success.
And even more, "All Fall Down" highlights the stress that so many women experience in feeling guilty for saying no, in feeling compelled to try to help everyone while sacrificing themselves.
The best fiction book I've read this year, "All Fall Down" is a must-read for every woman or anyone who says "I can handle it" about drugs or alcohol.
