Jenny Sanford, "Hero" of the Spurned Sisterhood?

“The cheated-upon spouses of the world have a new hero, and her name is Jenny Sanford.”

So says Time magazine in praise of of Jenny Sanford, wife of South Carolina Mark Sanford, who filed for divorce on the grounds of adultery. The announcement came months after Governor Mark Sanford admitted he wasn’t “hiking on the Appalachian Trail” over the summer when reports surfaced that had gone missing but was in Argentina with a mistress he described as his “soul mate”. Jenny knew of the affair in January before media reports surfaced. She asked the Governor to move out and told him “in no uncertain terms” to stop seeing his mistress. Obviously, he didn’t. But the two were trying to work things out and Sanford told the Associated Press, “It’s one thing to forgive adultery,” she said. “It’s another thing to condone it.” (See www.chicktalkdallas.com/blog)

The ”hero” of the Spurned Sisterhood appeared on Barbara Walters in last week’s 10 Most Fascinating People special as did Kate Gosselin. Sanford, a Georgetown-educated, former Wall Street vice president, told Walters, “Certainly his actions hurt me and they caused consequences for me, but they don’t in any way take away my own self-esteem,” she told Walters. “They reflect poorly on him.” She also announced on the Walters special that she was writing a book about her ordeal and she gave a recent interview to Vogue . (I found it interesting that Sanford chose to speak to Walters who’s been divorced herself and who admitted to having an affair with a married man in her memoir Audition.)

Time also praised her for not standing in as The Good Wife (see Silda Sptizer, see Elizabeth Edwards), “For starters, this summer when her husband held the customary I-have-disappointed-my-family press conference, she did not appear alongside him. This was a doubly wise move, since the governor apparently chose to make the most emotional and difficult announcement of his life without a script. Not only did Jenny Sanford avoid looking like a fool for literally standing by her man, she didn’t have to be associated with what quickly devolved into a p.r. train wreck.” (Follow www.chicktalkdallas.com/blog)

It certainly raises new questions for the spouses of recent cheaters Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons, David Letterman, and Nevada Sen. John Ensign. And now the pressure is on Elin Nordegren Woods, the latest member of the Spurned Sisterhood whose husband’s rampant affairs with a porn star, cocktail waitresses,  hostesses etc. have caused him lost sponsorship and two trips to the hospital (one for Tiger, the other for Elin’s mom). Rumors of Woods trying to negotiate the marriage agreement, offering to pay his wife to stay married and put up with him sickens people.

And with Sanford’s example I wonder, will leaving become the new norm?

My heart goes out to everyone that becomes a victim of an affair.  I believe it's one of the most heart breaking, traumatic experiences anyone can ever live through.  Most marriages can survive affairs.  It really depends on each partners willingness to do what it takes.  For Jenny Sanford, she was initially willing to work through it.  Obviously her husband wasn't as he continued on with the affair.   She's really held herself well through this very trying time and I hope she becomes a role model for other women that find themselves in her situation.
