Join the Postage-Paid Protest: Occupy Wall Street at Home

The Occupy Wall Street movement started on the street, but you can keep the protest going at home. Poet Artie Moffa suggests keeping the banks on Wall Street occupied with their own junk mail. The more people who join the movement, the more the banks will notice. It's easy to do if you get unsolicited credit card offers in the mail. These credit card offers are from the same financial institutions that hurt our economy by speculating on the housing market.

Postage Paid protest

Inside each irritating credit card offer is a postage-paid envelope for you to return with your credit card application. This is where it gets interesting. In a "postage-paid offer" the bank only pays the post office for the envelopes that are actually mailed back to them. And the banks are assuming you will mail back just the "lightweight" application.

Now here comes the fun part. In Artie's words, it's an easy and non-violent way to "drive the big banks out of their greedy little minds." You can just mail back the envelope as is. Or you can be even more proactive and make the bank pay more in postage by filling up the envelope with other discarded mail. Or if you really want to get creative, get a wood shim at the hardware store (about $2 for 12 of them) and put that in the envelope. The heavier the postage-paid envelope gets, the more the credit card company gets billed.

Remember to add a handwritten message in the envelope telling the banks just what you think about the crazy investments they made that are hurting all of us today. Join the postage-paid envelope protest and turn those unwanted credit card offers into something meaningful: a message to the banks that got us into this financial mess.

Here's the clever video in its entirety:

More ways you can Occupy Wall Street:

A group of writers now have a posted their support of Occupy Wall Street at OccupyWriters.com. According to GalleyCat, Alice Walker, Jonathan Lethem & 1,943 Other Writers Support Occupy Wall Street: The petition is composed of a single sentence:

“We, the undersigned writers and all who will join us, support Occupy Wall Street and the Occupy Movement around the world.”

I encourage all bloggers to write about the movement.

It was Barney Frank & Chris Dodd who introduced the bill that became law that led to the bank crisis. It was government's interfering that forced banks to give loans to people who could not pay them back.. Banks would much rather get paid than foreclose.

loan: noun

something lent or furnished on condition of being returned, especially a sum of money lent at interest: a $1000 loan at 10 percent interest.

The media seems to always leave out that pertinent information.

Capitalism is what has made our country great. Without Capitalism, the poor would always remain poor. Without capitalism, there would be no "Cinderella Stories".

The media also leaves out the tens of thousands of new regulations business has been hit with during the Obama administration. This makes it very difficult for businesses to hire.

We're all mad about the same things. "Occupy" has listened to the media as gospel and the media no longer digs to find the truth.

I suggest you do.

Otherwise be careful, you jut might get what you're protesting for - Marxism.

Operation Poetry: You know how contemporary poetry has the potential to drive some amongst us nuts? As a contemporary poet, I know this for a fact. Okay, here's an idea--make numerous copies of your favorite poems by the OccupyWriters such as this one by Jorie Graham (http://occupywriters.com/works/by-jorie-graham) and send them in the nice postage-paid envelopes we're supplied. Within days, U.S. banks will be waving white flags.

Oh! In the end you are not really driving the banks crazy - you are driving the under paid workers who have to open the envelopes crazy...But I like the idea!

victorias_view Interesting point, Victoria. Not sure if human hands will handle the mail since so many jobs like that are automated. And that is a whole other topic to write about.

victorias_view It actually will help the underpaid employees keep their jobs. Large banks are laying people off now - usually the hardest working people.
